#21They are pretty cool reels. This one sits in the box because I'm a wrong hand wind kind of guy.
Pretty cool swirl to the handle too.
Bob
( Very nice to see Ron back. Really enjoy the Ron Matusalem, and I ordered some of the salsa for my wife. Lets just say that the shipping from Texas to New England is worth it. Thank you!)

#22Hi Bob
ps - you gotta show the date on the bottom of the box
pss - what brought me back here is a critical evaluation of my tackle collection.
I've bought kayaks, firearms, built bikes selling tackle.
Right now I'm working on a 1957 (s/n verified) Raleigh Lenton Grand Prix - it was just a bare frame and original fork
It won't be original, but will look traditional - I can make a better bike for less money than it would take to buy back the original parts.
Had to have some custom hubs built, which cost me $500.
Something that's really cool about this frame that overlaps with reels. The steel frame was blued (chemically patinated) before it was painted, and this must be the last year they did that treatment. The paint was originally silver, but the bluing and silver have diffused together to make platinum.

Re: Pflueger Gem questions
#24Good evening folks.
My first time here on the forum. The reason why is I recently found a 2094 Phlueger Gem fly reel in a trunk that belonged to my grandpa. He passed in 1968 and I remember him being an avid fisherman when I was a little kid.
It looks to be in excellent condition, has the top of the original box but not the bottom.
Here are some pics.
There is also a Marshall bamboo pole set in a case. Its pretty beat but all of the rod pieces are still there. Looks like a spinning rod tip also.
Just trying to get some info regarding this stuff. I still need to take photos of the Marshall rod set.

#25Pflueger reels and your story is as good as the letters on the side Made in AKRON O USA. Lovely if not quirky paint.
I would keep that one and pick up another one or 4 for fun if you want. The GEM is a winner.
Put that reel in your hand every day for a few minutes - spin it either direction and hear the click change tone.
Pick up every other fly reel from now on and do the same.
The one you showed might be the best one ever.

#26I sold a neat Gem 2094 and 3 spools here last year. Some fever clucker drilled and tapped the lineguard, drilled and countersunk 4 holes in the frame, got some Medalist screws and voila! Reversible reel.

#27This kind of thing needs to be done more often.
You can take a hacksaw to a GEM - the replacement cost is low.
Thanks for the share/idea train that just started... Man, it just gets more and more fun here.

Re: Pflueger Gem questions
#32Several different versions of the Gem. Look for the riveted foot and that candy stripe handle for the oldest forms. The telephone latch came first, then the thumbscrew version with riveted foot. Next version had the foot attatched with screws and the thumbscrew but still retained the unique handle. Next came the marble like pink, amber and ivory handles.
I also found a boxed Gem with a destroyed handle and added the one pfoot swirled handle before they became harder to find. Great vintage reel to fish since I right hand wind.

Re: Pflueger Gem questions
#34Does anyone know when the Gem reels were discontinued? My guess is 1958.

#35Must figure out a way to fix this back to original.
What can be done to rectify this situation ?

#37Mr. Shaffer: I'm guessing that the parts needed to replace that "phone latch" will be darn hard to come by. Fabrication might be your only answer.

#39I'd try cutting a slot slightly smaller than the spindle latch
slot diameter from an appropriate size(ID and thickness) washer, then carefully push it on.
Although, the horseshoe latch should be pretty easy to fab I would think. Good luck.
BTW, the latch on the reel above is attached upside down. The button should be down to lock the latch when rotated into place.
Or maybe a Hobart retaining ring like this:

Re: Pflueger Gem questions
#40I would think that the real challenge would be the spindle. It's been cut and tapped for that screw. You can probably save the spool but...
