Self made reel

#1

Post by J Gustavsson »

I´ve been a total Hardy nut for a couple of years, mainly interested in Hardy Perfects.. But then suddenly my focus shifted towards S-handle reels, when a friend brought one of his Bo Mohlin reels in for a slight repair.
Since I like to make things I also wanted to make my own S-handle reel. It is made of Ebonite with NS rims an aluminum spool and a Godfrey type click and pawl mechanism.

Thanks! "She" is quite loud. I thought the ebonite would have a muffling effect on the sound.. but it is actually louder than the one I made with aluminum sideplates..

What a nice piece of work. Something to be be very proud of.
I know the Ebonite provides a traditional look but I could not help from thinking how that would look with carbon fiber side plates. Way outside anything traditional but it is functional and attractive. Just thinking out loud.

Here is it's predecessor before I got into the ebonite world..
It has black anodized aluminium sideplates and polished alu rings.
Also 3" but a bit wider than the ebonite reel.

Is it possible to post pictures of the click pawl mechanism? It would be nice to see the works on the inside of the reel.
Beautiful work!!!!!!!!!

Since you have made a better reel than the first one with the aluminum sideplates, how about sending me the first one? :)

Gorgeous!

Ha ha.. I actually like them both.
Inside of ebonite reel.. note the little blade spring holding the ball for positioning of the tension knob
