In my opinion that is always the best choice - use as intended. Enjoy a great reel! That 3 3/8" should balance one of your PHY rods nicely I would guess. I have a 3" twin I've posted earlier on this thread, but mine has a spot of corrosion, but still almost all leading remains.

Who told ya I have PHY rods? ;)

It’s certainly contemporaneous to early Youngs. I’m also just about finished making an 8’6” 6wt Parabolic that this reel would suit perfectly.

Yep, I’ll fish it.

Not many St. Georges, but do love these, including the multiplier:

My little 30s St. George Jr. on a High Sierra stream, just before season closed last month. Mounted on a 6 1/2' Guba/Bacon-Payne 96, with half of a DT4. A very fine day was had by all catching and releasing feisty wild brown trout.

And upstream it became a little colder, or, my frozen feet made me realize what I was wading in.

I received this white-handled 3-3/8" beauty from Mainiac many years ago. It has a smooth foot, beautiful rope-knurled drag adjustment screw, and a flawless smokey-amber agate. Both spool and cage are marked with a V. Now that I've got the reel opened up, it looks like I need to do some cleaning inside. The final photo shows that this reel is suitable for use whenever a bass drags your canoe across the pond like a miniaturized, slow-motion version of the Nantucket sleighride from Moby-Dick.

Quash, that is a beauty! The agate looks root beer-ish, a beautiful color!

I decided to use the V-marked St. George 3-3/8" reel today in combination with a PHY 9'0" Para 17 built in May 1951 for soybean chemist and researcher Walter Wolf of St. Paul, MN. I wish I could discover as much about the history of the reel as I know about the rod. A couple of trout stalked the fly this evening, but for the most part I enjoyed some casting practice.

Something very aesthetically pleasing about that last picture, colour, contrast, detail, lighting. Just lovely.

Well, I was lucky enough to have this reel in my hands, before it went to its new owner - a fellow forum member. Hopefully you enjoy it as well.

Wow! Silent check, but is that the original agate? Never seen one quite like that. Wish you had a close up view of it. Nice.

Now that is one rare reel. Left and wind and a silent check to boot. Looking at the rivet on the agate, it appears to be the same age as the others on the reel which would lead me to think that it hasn't been replaced. In addition, the silent check is different than most. The use of the two additional posts and spring is definitely unusual. The only other I have seen was stamped 2 M, which leads me to believe that this one was made in the same run.

The agate and silent check grabbed my attention so much, I completely missed the left hand wind. Truly an outstanding St. George.

Wow Sami - That is one of the best St. George's I have ever seen... definitely top 5 material.

Thank you for your positive comments, gentlemen!
I almost forgot to add that the current owner of the Silent check 3" LHW St George reel, my friend (a LHW guy), offered me (a RHW guy) a very nice user reel as a part of our trade.

Here is my contribution to this thread, which is a fraction of what it was before PB's thoughtless change.

They are all relatively new compared to most here.

Front to back:

- 2011 or 12 3" LHW reissue with agate line guard
- 1967 3" MK2 LHW with metal line guard and SINGLE ROW OF HOLES
- 1968 - eighties 3 3/4" MK2 with ceramic line guard (moved to make it LHW)

ImageImage

Whomever did the conversion on the 3 3/4" reel did a very good job - not perfect, but very good. I'm currently seeking an affordable 3 3/8 LHW or MK2 for conversion to round out the stable.
