Heddon 300 Series Reels

#1

Post by vette89 »

Would someone be so kind to let me know the dia. size and line weights for the Heddon 300, 310, and 320 reels? I'd like to know which reel would be the best fit for a 3 weight rod.

Many Thanks !

I have a 310 that is 3 3/16" diameter, loaded with 50 yards of 20# dacron backing and a DT5 Terenzio silk line. Not sure about diamater on a 300.
For that weight rod you will want something smaller.
Scientific Angler System 1 456 is a simple click and pawl, just a tad under 3" and might balance that weight rod out. i have one loaded with a DT4 that I use on a 6'3" 3/4wt rod.

the 300 matches the dimensions of the Hardy Featherweight, but I expect it to be a bit heavier. Out of the Daisy series, the 300 is certainly the only size I would recommend on a 3-wt. rod.

If the rod is 6'6" or less, you might do better with a smaller, lighter reel yet. If you watch Flyweights on ebay, you can occasionally find one for about $200.

this info was provided to me by bluemountains on fiberglassflyrodders board

from the April, 1970 William Mills and Son Tackle Catalog. Just guessing but I would think that similar Japanese made reels in this style probably weigh about the same.

#300 - 2 7/8" - 3 oz.
#310 - 3 3/16" - 3.5 oz.
#320 - 3 1/2" - 4 3/4 oz.
#340 - 3 3/4" - 6 0z.

A friend just acquired a Heddon 300 in a deal with a lot of other equipment. He has no idea what it’s worth, nor do I but I may be interested in purchasing it from him. He plans to sell it regardless. The reel looks well used but works fine. Any idea of what the range of this model would go for? Thanks

Often times the best place to acquire a retail price today is at the completed
auction listings on eBay for the Heddon model 300 in similar condition.

They range / fluctuate... but they are underpriced like many of the Hardy clones... just my opinion.
'Tis a better market for buyers and not sellers these days - on the old eBay.

Generally, people will pay the higher prices for pristine examples. Well used ones go for $25 all day long. Mint ones with the box can get over $100
