Bulldog's Hardy reel cleaning method

#1

Post by gt05254 »

I have used the search function for 15 minutes trying to find Bulldog's method for cleaning Hardy reels. I have a Marquis Salmon 2 that needs it. Can someone point me to it??
Thanks,
Gary

looks like the topic gets stickied one week, then unstuck the next. Bipolar admin is my guess.

my recommendation is always going to be try spraying with Boeshield first before you resort to the vinegar bath, especially on painted reels.

Good luck.

Thanks, gentlemen. I have a Marquis Salmon 2 that just came to me via Germany, and there is a very small bit of corrosion where the brass foot meets the reel body. There is a very small bit of paint (enamel?) loss at that attachment point. I guess I better google Boeshield!

When you go to vinegar is when the decomposed lube and dirt is so crusty Boeshield can't remove it.
Dealloyed brass or nickel-silver also benefits from it greatly.
It's actually nice to aluminum, but you have to be careful with paint since paint doesn't stick great to aluminum, anyway.

Re: aluminum and paint not sticking...I know what you mean. In a past life, I restored Ferrari's and their like, and had to deal with that situation constantly.

I just ordered 4oz of Boeshield.
Thanks,
Gary

Last question (hopefully): what do you (if you all do) polish the rim of a spool as on the Hardy Marquis Salmon?
Gary
(Can you tell I've been fishing Orvis Battenkill LA's for the last few years??)

if it's oxidized, that's not a bad idea.
the "miracle polishing cloth"s they sell on ebay work great.
Chase with a soft cloth and wax or at least Boeshield.

Thanks, Bulldog, you've been most helpful! Never owned Hardy reels before, and I purchased a very nice Salmon 1 and the Salmon 2 recently to help me move into two hand casting in some sort of "traditional" way.
Gary

oh, and I just ordered a couple of those miracle clothes on ebay. This was an expensive thread for me to start!!
(although significantly less than the two Hardy's, lol)
