I've got an old Hardy Uniqua 3 5/8" reel.

It is a dual pawl drag but it's slightly different then others I've seen on the web. It's spool retainer is a small spring lever vs a half moon style.

Just wondering if anyone knows much history on this reel.

I think I stumbled into a fine 3 5/8" 1903-1909 Hardy Uniqua trout reel. Has "TB" (Thomas Bates - dates?)maker mark stamped inside next to 1896 flat caliper spring/pawl check. 2 screw pawl mount. A 6 (or 9) is stamped on the back side of spool. "Hardy Patent Uniqua Reel" stamped on face of spool, 180 deg from Ivorine handle. Square (hand filed) frame pillars. Round edge smooth brass foot - appears work done to it?.

I thought it was a 20s vintage, but some research changed my mind. Life was good today. :pipe

Same thing has happened again. This seems to be an issue on this forum and requires the recipient to read the msg before it disappears from the Outbox. Strange. ???

It's actually a nice feature to let you know when the recipient has read the message. ;)

I just found a new to me Uniqua - 4 screws to the foot... marked WS, with the long arm latch.
It that Wilford Sinson ? It's a 2 7/8ths reel.

Hi Brian, it is likely to be Wilf Sinton. Do you have some pics of the reel?

It's here and is smooth with absolutely 0 end play or wobble. Eddie <*))))>< P.S. It also is marked 77 on the spool and frame.

Can someone explain to me the definition of wobble and end play, just to be clear ?
I will get some pics up of my reel reel once I get a new camera... my old one took a dump on me.
This new one to me is one of the early ones with only writing to the face. Wow is it loud!!

Brian,
The end-play is the spool sliding up and down the spindle when the latch is engaged. Wobble is the spool swaying back and forth again when the latch is engaged. Uniqua's are somewhat famous for that, at least from my experience. Still, I can't see enough of them as they are very pleasing to my eye on older rods or new rods fashioned after an older model. Some of mine have the end-play but I am happy to live with it.

According to Drewitt, there are two versions of the 1912 check; one is as your picture shows and the other is, to me at least, more like a 1912 Perfect check with the longer curved spring, but no brass piece since there is no regulator. Take a look at ca. page 169 of his book.
Yes, in addition to salmonfly's beautiful example fitted with the earlier version of the 1912 (1910/11) check, here are a few photos of my 3 1/8" Uniqua fitted with the later version of that check.

I misplaced my Drewitts copy and the little Hardy Book of the Reel is just that ... little.
This the exact check I have on my reel - only I have a 4 screw foot. Can we date this check ?
Mine is also stamped W S with a 1 over it.. which i know it is Wilford reel.
Also, mine has the writing on the spool face - PATENT UNIQUA REEL and HARDY Bros LTD ALNWICK circular
2 7/8 model... brass foot. White handle. Crazy thin bars, long elbow release and super loud click.
'Tis a shame its got a tiny chew off the left side of the foot.

The check dates to approximately 1912 to 1917.

Here's an Abercrombie & Fitch Uniqua I acquired last year. It had been painted an unfortunate shade of battleship gray. In the first picture I had just cleaned up an excessive amount of what appeared to be axle grease. In the second, I had removed the paint to reveal the somewhat scratched (but still better than the lousy paint job) original finish.

Can anyone offer a time period for the sale of Hardy-made Uniquas by A&F?

Yes, it is 3 1/8" in diameter. I used acetone and paper towels. The acetone blistered up the paint and made it easy to wipe away, apparently without affecting what was left of the original finish. It did, as the photo shows reveal what appears to be some effort to sandpaper the reel. Not a problem, however; the bushings are tight and it functions as if it were new.
