:lol Yeah, reeling "the correct way" is a great advantage when you're into vintage reels! Good for us RH.winders that most people started switching to LHW nowadays. Leaves more nice reels for us! :D

4 1/2" Farlow Perfect. A very nice Spey reel.

Cool reel! question: Is the rim broken or is that a "factory feature" so you can palm the spool?

Here's one that I picked up awhile back and just got around to taking photos of this weekend.
Without a doubt, this is as close to mint as I will probably ever touch. As the label says, it's a Youngs Pattern 10B, 3-1/2" with a spare spool, and the box.

The finish is of the leaded type and the spool face on the reel has a little rash that I suspect came from the spindle of the spare spool while being transported in the box together. It appears to only affect the laquer finish. The style of the adjustment knob leads me to believe that this reel is a pre-1930s product.

I like to fish my reels, but this one will probably stay home.

My guess is aftermarket, not by Farlows, but by a reel repair guy for someone that wanted an auxillary brake (palming) for hot fish. This is based on patina (finish) difference on the frame cutout radii. Fairly well done though. Filing and finish work is smooth and done with some care and precision.

But this is speculation and a best guess. I don't think this is common.... but not unheard of.

A conversation piece none the less when sitting stream side smoking a stogie and sipping on a good scotch. :pipe

I did.. (get a new reel lately)
A 3" st George mark II. nothing groundbreaking but a nice and tight reel.
Lovely patina and an agate without cracks.

Johan
It's a highly disturbing 'back ground' on you pics - difficult to concentrate on that nice 3 screw SG only !
A 3 3/8" again ?

Acquired this some months ago from a true Gentleman on this forum - it is my holy grail. I will fish it honorably on an Orvis rod.

Beautiful St. G and cases.

Excellent CFO. Hard to find, doubly so in that condition.

Condition is good to very good, some honest and typical edge wear. Mechanical condition is excellent. Agree, just to find one with the inverted script which you can acquire is the hard part. I was very lucky that morning looking at the Classifieds here.

Picked up a nice Hardy Perfect 3 5/8" recently. The reel had a good sinking tip line on it and came with a case. It also had about 5 lbs of old grease on its works but cleaned up ok. I think it was made 1978-82. This is my first Perfect.

I also found an older Medalist 1494 (not that I need another one). I bought this one because it had a DT silk line on it, but it turned out to have some rot and may not be salvageable.
