What Are You Tying This Week

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

Tied buggy the GRHE & Hare's Ear Nymp is one of my go to flies. They work year round. I tie a lot of flies, but if I had just one to fish it would be some version of a Hare's Ear.

Bob,

That is not fair! You list the name of a fly; you even say it's your favorite to tie, but you don't include a picture. Why do you torture us like that?

Been trying to hook up with a nice Redfish, wx not cooperating here in Amelia Island, but I did bring my Tying gear with me. Lots of black clousers for Speckled Trout. Had to adjust the color of my crabs for the flood tides in Spartina grass. Beautiful area Amelia Island, the tides are 6'! Plenty of shots at Reds but man are they tough! The Specks on the other had are plentiful and my wife always catches way more than me!

Yooper or Looper? I love those patterns Norm. I really like that Martuch bros pattern, the "Hillbilly", Leon started a little fishing company called S.A... That moth is brilliant and I am tying some later tonight. Thanks for sharing.

Two versions of a Hendrickson soft hackle. For the fly on the left, I made a thread tag then used the split-thread method to dub the body. For the fly on the right, I made a dubbing rope on my Clark's spinning block and used Orvis brown thread.

Image

Hook: Size 14 (wet fly)
Tail: Partridge fibers (brown)
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer - Salmonberry (#35)
Body: Hare's ear and beaver dubbing
Blended in an old seed/coffee mill
Hackle: Golden Plover wing feather (2 turns)

Bud,

What is the material list for your Trout Spey? I really like the way it looks. Where and how do you fish it?

I'm on a pheasant tail kick, because--who doesn't like them? These are not the Sawyer original 2-material fly, but several options of the "Americanized fly".

1st up is the beadhead flashback nymph:

Next is a soft hackle version:

Finally, some soft hackle heresy. I added a bead; 1 version at the head and another with the bead at the thorax:

Lets get this thread going again.....................

I've started tying soft hackles/flymphs for an early June trip to PA's Brodhead Creek where Big Jim Leisenring did a lot of fishing.

"Donation season" season is upon me, so tying up batches of salmon flies to give to organizations I support for fundraising. Just finished this batch of Celtic Beauties:

Got a new hip a week ago, so am getting help bringing materials up from the cave to tie up the next batch. Glitter Bears coming up.
