Preferred Scissors for Fly Tying

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

What type of flies are you tying and what are your primary materials? For general use, I love the Dr. Slick Tungsten scissors. Sharp and durable.

I used to like them--not so much now. The last pair of microtips I bought were not finished off properly--they were sharp, but the outer side was squared and did not come together in a point.

Old ones on left, new ones on right:

While the folks at Dr. Slick replaced them, I got a real runaround and a lot of excuses. So you suggestion is to check out any purchase carefully and make sure they are finished as they should be. This advice probably applies to any pair of scissors.

My wife is a quilter , and she turned me on to a pair called "Elan". I have tied over 1k flies with this pair and they are still very sharp. I love them.
They are from Japan , black ,with one serrated blade. Finger holes are sufficient as well.
You can find them on some sewing sites

Mine are no longer 4". Repeated sharpening has eaten away at them to where they are more like 2 1/2" - 3". I have a drawer full of Dr. Slick that never see the light of day.

My "best" scissors that I use for very fine work are the Dr. Slick Razor Scissors.
I have other pairs of scissors that only see general duty.

I have to say Razor Scissors are my favorites. Good steel, and adjustable tension. I also like the ease of taking them apart for sharpening.

This won't help you because you can't there from here. ;-)
I'm still using scissors that I got from Orvis in the 1970s. I haven't needed to have them sharpened in spite of using them to cut wire and metal tinsel. Besides being good scissors, they're so highly polished that I can use the backs of the blades to burnish floss and tinsel bodies. Good stuff if you can find them on the secondary market.

For me the Dr. Slick "Bent Shaft" scissors are best. Easy to pick up from the table. Sharp to the tips and durable. Though I wish the finger holes were a bit smaller.

Anvil Fine Point's (aka "Micro's"). I then grind the tips to a much finer and slender point with an ultra-fine sharpening stone. They can clip individual hackle barbules at that point. Plus they are light weight and have large adjustable finger loops and are comfortable to wear on my fingers while tying.

They are the best I have found for fine work and at $15.95 priced right also and made in the USA.

I have five pairs of scissors on the desk, but the two that get used the most are a pair of Anvils as pictured above by Dr.Logik and a pair of Dr. Slicks with extremely fine points. The others are used for coarse hair or hide and/or wire.

This won't help anyone either, but maybe 30 or 40 years ago I boosted a pair of Revlon 2041 cuticle (I think) scissors from my mother's sewing kit (or some kit of hers). They have curved blades, are super thin and can really get you right down where you want to go. I bought a modern pair of Revlon cuticle scissors; they are ok, but as you would expect, no match for the old timers. LOL, I boosted my dubbing loop spinner from her crochet kit about as many years ago. Surprisingly, she still seemed to like me.

Rudy - I don't tie near enough to justify any "real" opinion but the black-handled tungsten carbide serrated-edged Dr. Slicks I'm using are 18 yrs old and doing well.

Also FWIW Hans W., you know, that pro. tier who has a "following", when asked what tool he prefers to use told me he's been using Fiscars forever...or close to that!

I haven't bought scissors in 20 years. I just sharpen my own! Strike that a couple of years ago I bought some highly recommended Premana Italian scissors that were the hot thing but I had to sharpen them to work correctly!
