Glass beads for soft hackles

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

Glass beads for soft hackles

Post by PAGH »

Hi All,

Open to your suggestions/advice please. I’m new to tying so would you mind sharing:

1) brand/source for the glass beads you like?

2) size of bead you to use per size of hook?

3) what are your preferred thorax materials for behind the bead?

4) any particular pattern recipes that would be useful in Pennsylvania: Eastern (southern Pocono's), Central (Lewistown/State College/Mill Hall area), North Central (Pine and Kettle Creeks)

Thank you kindly,

PAGH

Check out your local arts & craft shop for beads. As for size, common sense works. Livingstone.

Plus 1 for a&c shops, or even a dedicated bead shop. I still have an ample (read: lifetime) supply from my single visit to the less touristic parts of San Francisco - there was this hippy bead shop that made me fill half my carry-on case with beads in all colours and sizes...

I bought a box of beads on Amazon. 2-4mm in diameter, 24 colors, for $8. The beads are also very useful for making pull-strings for thread wraps - something to grab on to, and I haven’t lost one yet since they are more visible.
