Bunyan Bug and A River Runs Through It

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

Good patent image.
Maybe this one is a bit darker. I got this one as a screen-capture from a Google Patent Search (after seeing what you posted).

Best Hat Fly Ever. I proudly sported one until my Lab at the time decided to chew it up. Somehow she did the desecration without piercing her lip or tongue.
Last year the little part time fly shop in Ovando had some new one's for sale. In memory they were $25-per. Someone on this board probably has the particulars.
Last June I had to commiserate with the guys in the shop at Divide after some jerk lifted one of their display BBs. Some people .....

Good last post. The Dotson site is one of the best out there, at least for Western Flies--although he really should hire a better photographer (me). I'm cheap too.

I'm very enamored with Helen Shaw and her flies. Wonderful work!

The Blackfoot Angler in Ovando, MT usually has some Bunyan Bugs tied by Richard Rose, Means' grandson.

Good going Kenov. These must have been the one's I saw last year at (if memory serves) $25 apiece. They may not be open yet- it is a very small operation. Nice people.

great info gentlemen. I have managed to collect a few of these flies throughout the years here in s.w. mt. found the first one hanging in the willows during the salmon fly hatch on the bighole 40 plus years ago! one always held my curiosity due to yellow/green color and bits of hair along abdomen. I now know it is a different pattern, greendrake. I once followed pat barnes down the bighole and retrieved a jughead from the willows, tied it on and proceeded to loose it awhile later! easy come, easy go. dborjas

I have a Jug Head Pat gave me. Like the Bunyan Bug it's not a politically correct match the hatch fly. But it's still a good one.
