Not just an eBay related topic as it relates to rod buying
#1in general......
I realize fishing is coming to a halt in some spheres and the time for cabin fever, winter blahs and just plain frazzled tempers is nigh approaching. So with the few posts of late that have taken some quirky twists and turns I thought it might be a good time to establish a little exchange in hopes that we can continue into the blue months with some established civility.
As of late several posters asked for some advice on certain high ticket items and their value and there have been numerous postings as well about some high prices some folks are willing to pay for a particular rod.
In the scheme of things what difference does it make what anyone, i.e. dealer, collector, fisher decides is a Fair price to pay to own something they obviously want? I realize some may think it foolish and folly but don't you think that playing that old saw is a bit over the top at times? I hope that the majority understands that good natured kidding is fine but there also comes a point in time when there's a need for simple conversation w/o the need to voice an opinion beyond what is being asked... What say you?

#2Banjo,
I agree totally. It's whatever a person thinks a rod or piece of property is worth.

#3It's a darn fine line between kidding and ridicule.
And to compound the issue is the contentious topic usually involves money. Nothing seems to inflame the testosterone more than a discussion of value. And it takes many forms. From so-and-so did such-and-such to jealousy about fine rods ending up in Pacific Rim Countries.
Typically the first question in our Appraisal section is what is it worth? not how does it cast? What does this suggest? At the end of the day for some, it is all about money. Ain't gonna change, that is just the way some are wired.
The question of value is so subjective that individual comments should be taken only as that, one man's perspective. I take those comments which might be considered snide, cynical or contemptuous with a grain of salt. On the other hand I enjoy reading a good skewering of the pompous and self rightous. Boastful and self-promoting postings are usually so obvious I often get embarrased for their clueless authors.
Another fine line is that between free expression and needless cenorship. I suppose if one must err, it should be on the side of good taste. But we are adults here and should not be overly sensitive to minor indiscretions or unintended slights. Unfortunately such utterances often lead to escalating retaliatory offerings and the usefulness of what ever discussion is lost in the smoke of bitterness.
Sometimes it?s a tough call Banjo, and that?s why you make the big bucks. Your loyal servant, Drew

#4Testosterone is just the start .........a favorite rod for some may as well be offspring. It is the finest line but in choosing between homogenized opinion and the especially small risk of bloodshed in order to get interesting and informed debate......I say stock up on bandages and neosporin and full speed ahead. I have full faith in you Sante to know when to say when.

#5Geez, been away a coupla weeks. This time
it had to be something I didn't say but
might have had I been around. So I'm
penitent. Not enough though to go to church.

#6BHB:
My wife askes that I to attend church regularly. She's heard my reply so often now that she has tapered off her requests: "I feel closer to God when I'm in the outdoors or on a trout stream. That really is my church."
Could it be that the threat of penance actually encourages my bad behavior?

#7A very good point, Uni. For certainly
testing limits is essential to human
growth. Our eighteen-month-old
granddaughter giggles and grins
impishly as she gives the old hound's
tail one more tug. But when her
mother doesn't laugh back and the dog
lets out a big basso bark of disapproval,
she relents. Her grandparents, ever mindful
of the child's edification, hurriedly leave the
room to do their laughing. It's among the
great ageless programs for improvement,
such as fishing on Sundays or readying for
a long Forum winter by anticipating mischief
from the membership. They keep us fit and
on our moral toes. Notice how we no longer
pull the leg of a guy who's limping? And there
are other subtle signs of our burgeoning civility,
too. Why it makes a fellow proud, especially
a VWB.

#8I have a problem on the opposite side of the $$ issue. I tend to get embarrassed when I am the successful bidder and get an item for much less than its actual market value. I might suggest for civility's sake that those in the know give a range of values for a rod. The highest price you know of, the usual price, and (if you must) the most-wonderful-deal-you-got-which-makes-all-others-pale-in-comparision.
Banjo, this business gets much worse if you ask fellow airline passengers what they paid for their tickets.

#10Drew, if they can be neither grandfathered in
nor applied to cover a miscreant like me in
absentia, I'll continue to follow them (as is
common practice here) by preempting their
principles with my practice. In short,
religiously.

#13All of this was about the CI's stiletto-sharp
diction? Poof. He's said worse about me
when he was trying to be kind. And, Bob,
you need to get back to the Red Sox game
and quit worrying about your . . . uh. They're
(the Bosox that is) the ones who seem to need
support and protection. I have thought of a
solution. Chris Raine is wondering what to do
with his old fishing hat. I propose that he donate
it to the CI and to Bob so that the former can
protect his . . . uh . . . during trips to the woodshed
and the latter can protect his . . . uh . . . during
trips to the Forum. The hat is evidently in
pretty bad shape, but then so are their . . . uhs.

#14... the fact that I've been having some problems of late only exacerbated by my dog breaking his foot on the Monday Pheasant opener, my wife getting ill and then my having to bring her mom in for the followup tests and drs visit to discuss her biopsys. Thankfully one was benign the other is so confusing they've sent the results to Boston for a closer look. At a minimum we have an 89 1/2 year old Alzheimers patient that probably has uterine cancer so perhaps when I post we be kinder to each other, so I don't have to continue to respond to endless IM's and email messages about grownups acting like folks they wouldn't care to know, you might at least listen. Thanks............
