Hello from western Canada

#1

Post by Vanislander »

Greetings from Edmonton Alberta. In an effort to stem the boredom of the new corona reality (and to satisfy a long standing intrigue with the concept) I acquired some forms, a wrapper and some lower grade boo and am about to embark on my latest hobby (I can see my wife's eye roll as I type this). I'm typically more of a reader than a participant when it comes to the internet but the amount of freely, community provided insight and knowledge that this website (and others) provides to newbies such as myself, behooves me to share some of this journey with you all. The first 2 rods my friend and I will attempt with cutthroat stream fishing in mind will be a Payne 98 and a Dickerson 7013.

Welcome Vanislander, looks like we are neighbors. Nice to have more bamboo rod user's in the Edm area. I went down the bamboo rabbit hole about 20 years ago and I would be more than happy to help you along the way. Now days I mainly do rod restoration work but still finish new rods as I find time.
Cheers,
Ron

Sorry for the late reply Ron, appreciate the offer to help. Work on the rods has admittedly slowed down with all of this beautiful weather we've been having but I'll get back in the saddle soon enough. Where do you usually fish in our neck of the woods, the potholes or long drives to rivers out west?

Dale, I mainly spend time in the Crowsnest Pass area for cutthroat trout on the dry fly, but do fish around Calgary once in a while and sometimes go for grayling north west of Edmonton. I've done some pike fishing on the fly locally too. Anytime you want to chat about rods let me know. Yes I spend more rod building time during the winter. Now is fishing time!

Alberta is beautiful. I fish the Crowsnest area, love the Oldman and Livingstone.
