Hi, Y'all--greetings from Colorado!
I found this forum while searching the Internet to find out what a P204LH is, since I was interested in a rod (not a Payne) built on that taper. One of the links led to a discussion here of that very topic. (It's a Payne 204 taper; the L means Light, and there was uncertainty about the H. Talking to the maker, I learned that in this case the H means Hollow-built.)
I started fly-fishing in 1962, at the age of 16, with a couple of abominable fiberglass rods. When I could afford the daunting price of $100, I bought my first bamboo rod, an Orvis Battenkill "Midge," which is a very slow rod without enough backbone for general fishing. That was probably in 1967. Nevertheless, I caught a lot of fish with it over the years. I acquired a couple of other bamboo rods and fished mostly with them before good graphite rods appeared and I bought my first one in the late 1980s. Since then I have used bamboo only occasionally. Now, I'm getting nostalgic and reviving my interest in bamboo.
I don't know if any of my rods are old enough to be considered classic, but I probably am. I look forward to learning more about classic rods on this forum.
