Reel #3

#1

Post by stoneflyer »

Hi everyone,

I recently finished my third reel. It was started a few years ago and I finally finished it up, probably because my new double handed rod needed a reel and everything I had was either too heavy or too light.
It is a 3 1/2" hardy perfect style reel. It is a wide drum and weighs a hefty 12.4 ounces.
Materials:
Frame-Aluminum 6061
Face plate-I think it is Aluminum 7075
Copper accents-Terillium copper 145
Spindle- bearing bronze 932
Balls-SS
Bearing housing-bearing bronze 932
Screws-Brass 360
Spring-music wire
Spring block and tensioner-brass 360
Pawl and gear-A2 steel
Handle-Ebonite (Shout out to Jorge C for graciously giving me some stock at Canadian Cane years ago! So much nicer than more modern plastics)

Congratulations! Very nice work!

Looking through your image archive I must say your work is amazing. It must be very satisfying to fish with equipment that you've made which is so exquisite!

Thank you everyone for the kind and encouraging words. Making fly tackle is a wonderful and fun hobby.
I recently took ownership of an old New Hermes Engravograph and used it on the reel. I need to work on the sizing and proportions but the machine is sure fun to use.

Although I was looking for a hot steelhead to really test the reel, I guess it is only fitting that the first fish on the reel was a copper colored brown!

Nice fish, good reel. It took Kiley a while to learn to use his lettering machine.

Great looking reel, amazing work to say the least.
