Fly Fishing the Gunnison Country

Fly Fishing books are one of my favorite topics! I love to read them and I love to write them. Just wanted to mention my book, Fly Fishing the Gunnison Country, as I can see that a LOT of folks on this forum fly fish or have interest in fly fishing in the Gunnison, Almont, Crested Butte, and Lake City areas in Colorado, which is the subject for this guidebook. Several forum members have a copy and I'm hoping that a few of you will be willing to post an honest review of the book.

Doug Dillingham's book is quite a handy guide and the most current and thorough reference work on the area. In it, he covers well the area's rivers and smaller waters, and even some high altitude lakes. There is a chapter for each waterway, which includes information regarding the hatches throughout the season, the trout species present, recommended fly patterns, and a map which provides just enough detail to keep the angler well oriented. Typical of most tailwaters, the Taylor River generally requires anglers to have several smaller fly patterns for the C&R stretch, but for the rest of the area however, any well seasoned western fly fisherman will recognize the listed insect patterns, and likely already have satisfactory imitations in their fly boxes.

There are a few things you should know before visiting Gunnison Country though, the town of Gunnison itself is at elevation 7,700 feet ... and the waterways continue up past the 11,000 foot level mark ... so be sure to have yourself in good physical condition. And not unlike a lot of the West these days, and working it's way East, sections of the backcountry are now shared with the various ATV's. Although they will not directly interfere with your fishing success, the backcountry simply is not always as quiet as it once was. 2 wheel drive vehicles will get you to a lot of the water, but a good, well outfitted, short frame, high clearance 4X4 always has the upper hand to help reach some higher altitude opportunities where the roads get a little dicey.

I read this book a while back, and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the writing and the information. The author lives an admirable life, and I found his "presence" quite rewarding. I highly recommend this book whether you plan to fish the area or not.

Incidentally, I just finished Ted Leeson's "The Habit of Rivers" and all I can say is that Mr. Leeson is an incredibly gifted grammarian.
