Re: What are you fishing this week?
#1228Just a few days left in the Tasmanian season so I felt a desperate need to get out, even though the conditions were not exactly favourable. Due to a down-stream breeze, decided to fish my Stone 5 weight based on a Payne 102 taper. The rod was a bit too strong for the stream but it was good to give it an outing. Recent rain had the river discoloured so I explored the edges with a dry fly. Ended up attracting quite a few takes but most were small browns in the 10 inch zone. The one downer for the day was when I dropped my fly box whilst changing flies and the contents spewed everywhere. Don't you just love it!!

#1229An 8’ 4 wt 3/2 Bradford with 3 inch St. George and H&H high floater. DT5, starting with lightly weighted soft hackles, moving to duns.

#1230Rivers were a little high in Jersey so i christened my 6'6 Bob taylor or some brookies. It is a very nice rod.
If i get out Sunday i will be most likely using a 8'5 James Reid Spliced 4wt and fishing subsurface unless i can find some hendricksons.

#1232It was perfect today. With the sudden hot weather, there were suddenly tons of 16ish caddis in the AM, followed by Hendrickson type and big sulphurs, as well as some Olive type 16/18. 14 Catskill Dun type fly and a 16 sparkledun covered it all. Started with a softhackle dropper, but cut it off with the good surface action. Probably caught more fish today in 6 hours than I have in the last 10 trips this year. Crazy how many fish a 100 yards of river can hold, especially when I couldn’t buy a fish a month ago in same. The Colonel’s handiwork did well. Could have gotten away w/o waders.joep wrote: ↑04/22/22 09:38Never knew he made and 8" 4wt, that much be one hell of a rod.creakycane wrote: ↑04/22/22 05:28An 8’ 4 wt 3/2 Bradford with 3 inch St. George and H&H high floater. After the trout get on these bugs for a week, they won’t be this easy. That’s when the cdc comes out, and the creative tying starts.

I never knew he made that rod either. It's not in the brochure that I have. When I first talked to Mr. Bradford about buying a rod, that's the configuration I inquired about. He talked me out of it. (I really like 8' 4 wts.). Congratulations Creaky, I'm guessing that's a rare rod! (Yes, you're reading envy here.) A picture would be greatly appreciated. Any thoughts you'd like to share on the action?

#1236A beautiful and soft DT2F Leonard Catskill taper 8' made by Dennis Stone ... small natives in headwaters - early yet - still in transition as to greenery. But the hemlocks are beautiful as always. Small natives on #20 blue quills or #20 caddis... This taper is perfect with 10' 7X and spooky natives in gin clear waters..."Pretty Fishing" as they used to say...
