#1482Fished a Gallas Para 93 7’9” 5 wt with a St George 3 screw 3 inch and stonefly dry with a tungsten beadhead stone on a long dropper. 7 or 8 small to middlin’ browns, all on the nymph. Saw a couple of stones fluttering, but no rises………

Thanks for the LBSF intel!
It's amazing how the release of Troegs Nugget Nectar coincides with LBSF hatch.
A great pairing!

#1484Fished yesterday with a 8 1/2' Kushner B Dennis Stone blank that I finished out. Caught a few trout and a few whitefish on a Prince nymph. Beautiful day to be out,

#1485I fished a rod, based on the taper, generously shared by Forum member norcal_1, mapped at 1-inch intervals by Jeff Hatton (Gnome on the Forum), and built by Jim Ifert (Kentucky Jim on the Forum) of an Orvis 5'5" 3/2 prototype pack rod that was not put into production.
Even though the weather was not as favorable as I had hoped (air temp of 30F rising to 39F and water temp of 37-38F on arrival), the fish did cooperate enough that I was even able to land multiple trout on a dry fly! I consider days like that to be "stolen days" when experienced in January.

#1487Beautiful skies, classic cane, Steelheads and Bald Eagles....? You sure know how to elicit envy from a guy! That looks like the kind of outing most of us dream about. Thanks for sharing - wow!

#1489Today it was still, overcast and dull so I decided to have a fish. As I made my way up a very low stream, I was followed by a flock of white cockatoos. I sometimes suspect that their screeching is some sort of a reprimand in relation to a previous indiscretion. They really give it to you. Nothing was moving on the river so it was a matter of fishing to structures. Ended up having a pretty good session and caught on dry fly some beautifully marked brownies up to around 14 inches. Used a four weight I recently had converted to fibreglass ferrules - very full flexing and light in the hand. Oh, as well as the cockies, I came across two platypuses just quietly going about their business.

#1490Sounds perfectly good day Pete.

#1491Thanks Jay. Oxford Dictionary has it as platypuses. They are wonderful creatures.
Re: What are you fishing this week?
#1493Fished Tuesday though the sunshine evaporated early. Not really a photo op day, but it was pretty good for winter fishing. Since we have no dry fly fishing in winter, I escape cabin fever by swinging "movement flies" whenever the rivers are ice-free and the days habitable. My Steve Kiley 8' 6/7 rod gets most of this duty. I am told he was fond of dickering with Dickerson tapers, though I got no specifics on this taper when I purchased the rod from a Forum member. Not fast, indeed rather full working, but it casts the winter intermediate as well as a floater very nicely.
I wanted a rod that was versatile when I acquired this one during my retirement planning stage. It handles the small streamers and soft hackled creations I swing and does a wonderful job in the off season, while there is still a chance at dry fly Nirvana. A couple of autumns ago the rod fulfilled its destiny when I quickly reworked the leader and presented a size 20 olive to a spur of the moment sipper: 22 inches
Tuesday we wrangled the first 20" brown of the year on a new pattern, the Dazed Dace, my first "movement fly" intended to imitate a specific baitfish!

#1494That is some "home river", paramount!
And, Caneghost, that is one good-looking fishy fly! And, I love the name.

#1496Stellar new stick - headed out rain or shine...

#1500Tomorrow is my "opening day" and ritual is important for the season's mojo. That said, I will be using my Lamiglas 7.5' 4wt fiberglass; the "Dave Reilly Special", honoring the so-so fisherman who encouraged every early fly fishing effort of mine, teamed with an Ocean City reel handed down from my Uncle Nick, the party boat, deepsea nutcase who taught me to fish as a boy. This combo will always be with me and will continue to be fished first, in honor of the guys who taught and encouraged me as I grew as a young angler and as a young man.
