Re: What are you fishing this week?
#1241On Wed, is my first outting with 2 Phillipson rods that I restored this past winter. The top is a 9' Pacemaker and the bottom is an 8' Pacemaker. Heading out to the Provo River and both rigged up to do the "Provo River bounce" (google it...). Having never tossed an 8' Phillipson before, I am hoping for calm winds so that I can get a good feel for it.

#1242I believe you'll like the 8' Pacemaker; it's an excellent rod!

I never knew he made that rod either. It's not in the brochure that I have. When I first talked to Mr. Bradford about buying a rod, that's the configuration I inquired about. He talked me out of it. (I really like 8' 4 wts.). Congratulations Creaky, I'm guessing that's a rare rod! (Yes, you're reading envy here.) A picture would be greatly appreciated. Any thoughts you'd like to share on the action?

I like it with a DT-5 and long leader for dry flies at closer range. It is fine with any DT4 at a distance, too.

Yesterday, it was a Howells 8' 5 wt 3 3/4oz
Later in the week, I hope to have a 7 1/2 Robbins 5 wt see some stream time. This rod screams Catskill spring dry flies...........
Re: What are you fishing this week?
#1245Got out for the first trip of the season yesterday. There were enough bugs on the water--Hendricksons, Quill Gordons, Olives, Black Caddis--but I think I only saw three rises all day, none to any of my flies. Even without a fish, casting Hendricksons (pictured is my version of a Last Chance Cripple light Hendrickson pattern) in the Catskills is a pretty fine way to to break in a new to me Payne 201, with my 3" St. George and a Phoenix DT 5 silk. No complaints whatsoever, and it won't be long before those fish are looking up.

#1248creakycane wrote: ↑04/26/22 08:25Thanks for the info Creaky! As far as I know, Mr. Bradford’s later rods were similar to Payne tapers. And of course, his later Legacy rods are medium to darker shades of cane. But I’ve heard that he’s made rods similar to Dickerson and Leonard tapers and I’ve seen a few of his rods that were blond, so I was just wondering if yours was one of Mr. Bradford’s earlier rods. Regardless, you have a gem! One&Duns wrote: ↑04/23/22 08:46It is pretty much the standard Bradford look, with stained birds-eye spacer S/N 16xx. it is labeled 4 1/8 oz (scale weight 4.2oz) for a DT4, 8', 3/2.creakycane wrote: ↑04/22/22 17:45joep wrote: ↑04/22/22 09:38Never knew he made and 8" 4wt, that much be one hell of a rod.creakycane wrote: ↑04/22/22 05:28An 8’ 4 wt 3/2 Bradford with 3 inch St. George and H&H high floater. I have to get my Legacy out on the water as much as possible before I hand it off to my son – either next month, when he graduates, or in the couple years when he marries that girl of his. I’m leaning towards the latter.
Next up are Howells and Robbins.... man, must be tough to choose?
Enjoy
Thanks again

#1259Picked up a PHY Para14 clone from Jim Ifert at Bamboo Bash. We are now parked on the banks of the White River in AR in our Airstream. I hopped into the river right off and let loose a size 14 soft hackle into a 15-20 mph breeze, and after about 30 minutes of fighting the wind i decided to pack it in.. As I started retrieving line I felt a healthy tug.. 15 min later I was starting at a 24 inch brown. Great way to end the day. I must say that Jim' rendition of the Para14 was ever-increasing could hope for in a clone. Great handling, even in those heavy winds, and sturdy enough to best a big bad brown. Good work Ifert!!
