What Are You Tying This Week

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

That is 18 doz Dette Yellow Stones on a #6 hook. Have another 12 doz to go on the #6's. Then 30 doz in #8,10,12 and 14. Yikes. The things I do to support my cane habit.

Bob,

I would like to see that fly up close. Any chance you could post a picture of a single fly for us to admire?

Thanks- Ken

Tying a lot of deer-hair patterns--many originated by Fran Betters: Haystacks, Caddis, Usuals, Mini-muddlers, and Fran's Dobsson/Stone fly. I love tying these, though hate picking out of my wine glass the deer hair trimmings, lol.

Things my winter reading inspires...
Yesterday I worked up a dubbing for my own take on a Tup's Indispensable.

No problem Ken. They have been a top seller at the Dette shop for years. Another big pattern that I made for them is the Iso nymph and will soon be making those Catskill dries with the wood duck wings. Love making those. Joe's great to do business with.

A friend at work told me his son, who goes to college in CO, is learning to flyfish. I wanted to give him a 2-dozen fly starter selection and knew I had to include some dries. This is way out of my comfort zone, but good for me!

Dubbing from pets works, have used both cat and dog hair-underfur. Have black cocker that has nice fine underfur with the odd longer one, like a fine seal almost, little softer. You guys inspire me and to see Norm,s tyes first thing in morning is great. That Cains Copper is well-makes me feel like sitting in front of vice right now but know could,t make one as nice. Such nice work. made my day Thanks .Daryl
Like that smoke jumper to Doc,you posted while trying to get my thoughts together after looking at everyone previous posts. Pretty lucky to have all these quality flys to look through first thing on a Sunday morning.

Leisenring's Black Gnat:

Image

Hook: Maruto D82 - Size 14
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer - Claret
Body: 3 fibers from a crow's secondary wing feather
Hackle: Purplish black feather from a Starling

Notes: I omitted the optional wing of dark Starling since the fly in the photo in the book didn't have a wing.
Kept the hackle short like the fly in the book photo (page 113).
For the fly on the left, I added a rib of 6X tippet material since those crow wing fibers seemed very fragile.

Tight Lines- Ken
