Firehole seems to be a very much loved stream here.
It looks like it's going to be very crowdy when I decide to come over! :D

Great stories guys!

Whitefish?? I've fished the Firehole for decades and can't remember ever catching one. For one thing thing whities are far less tolerant of warm water than trout, so wouldn't survive well in the Firehole. Guess I can't say they aren't there, but in my experience they aren't a consideration at all.

Yes, the Firehole can get crowded in the many beautiful spots right by the road, but you might be surprised by what you can discover by a little walking or fishing in some of the "off hours", even during the prime seasons.

My mouth is watering. How lucky you guys are to spend 37 summers fishing a river. Must be a pleasure.

I've caught them below the falls. Not a lot but every now and again. Never above the falls. The whities I take to smoke are from Rock Creek up near Missoula. They are prime in late winter. :)

Sounds absolutely great - if I may ask, on this day, if typical, which exact rod of yours would be by your side on the Firehole?
Just completes the image for me.... Thanks

A Livingston 863 (8'6" 3 wt) glass rod or a Winston 8' 5 wt cane rod if the afternoon wind becomes a factor.

My favorite two are a sweetgrass 7'9" 5wt pent and a Joe Bradley Para 14 7'9" 5wt. It's a great river.

Robert Sherrill 7’9” 3 wt when wind isn’t blowing. Same rod in 5 wt when it is.

The rod that is set up almost all the time when I'm in the Yellowstone area: my 8'3" Doug Daniel quad that simply sings with a DT4.

8 ft. 3 5/8 oz. San Francisco Winston for a WF-5 or DT-4 and just perfectly re-finished by Glenn Brackett.

If the wind comes up, I'd likely go to my 8 1/2 ft. PHY Special.

Firehole is magical.

Anyone familiar with the Firehole should recognize this location along the river.

My favorite fly rod for the Firehole. I swapped a Hardy reel with Eric for his A.J. Thramer 8 foot, 4wt hollowbuilt. I love this rod.

Thanks for breaking my long day up with this thread. Many customers all in a frenzy now looking for help.

Ah, so fine, what a place, lots of casting room, so easily waded. Like the time I was fishing and tourists stopped to take pics, so scenic I was, then I stumbled and almost went down.
