Favorite Fly Tier/video maker
#1Generally I don't like these "favorite" threads a whole lot. Not sure why. But I know a lot of us are holed up at home, and if the weather is lousy where you are, you may be running out of things to keep you occupied. I really enjoy watching fly tying videos(mostly youtube). Davie McPhail has always been one of my favorite tiers, but I am finding his videos especially appealing to watch lately, as he has a very soothing voice and the background music is very comforting as well. Not to mention that he is a great tier and instructor. If you are watching fly tying videos these days, who are some of your favorites.

#3The best video I have ever watched on fly tying was a VHS tape made by Del Mazza. Very difficult to find. He sent me a copy of it on DVD a number of years ago.
Dave Brandt has two videos on Catskill dry flies that are very good also.
After that then +1 for Oliver Edwards' videos.

#5I’ve learned a lot from McPhail’s videos, as I have those from Tightlinevideos...
Personally, I’ve been watching a lot of You Tube featuring Galloup and Craven’s work.
Variety is the spice of life...
Stay home and healthy, all...

#8Not a lot out there but sure do enjoy watching the Dennis Skarka videos. Only met him one time but sure did enjoy talking with him, regret wasn’t able to spend additional time talking with him and learning from his tying skills

#9Had the honor of taking some classes with Del back in the day when he visited my old favorite shop, American Angling Supplies in Salem, NH. Quite a character and amazing tier.DrLogik wrote:The best video I have ever watched on fly tying was a VHS tape made by Del Mazza. Very difficult to find. #10While not exactly a video, in 1976, as my newly wedded wife and I were walking into the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they were running a film of John Atherton tying a dry fly. I took it as good omen as I had just barely begun my plunge into flyfishing

#12I'm a McPhail fan, as well. I just wish I could understand what the hell he's saying!

#14I like Tim Flagler's videos and have picked up a lot of hints on tying shortcuts and various fly fishing gear (elastic tippet holder) from him. He certainly doesn't have the cool music or the fascinating accent like Davie though!

#16I am in no way a fan of fly tying videos. I really don't enjoy a close up view of someone's dirty fingernails. But that said I do like the videos from Bob Jacklyn. I like his down to earth workman like style. Otherwise my favorite all time fly tier is Richard Talleur.

#17In addition to the tiers that have been mentioned, I enjoy watching Gunnar Brammer. He ties mostly baitfish patterns and does a great job explaining technique, materials and how it relates to the flys action in the water. Very talented for such a young man.

#18I had a chance to take a class with "Uncle Dickie" long time ago. Fun stuff. Have a few of his books; well written.

#20I found the VHS Tape box cover for the Del Mazza tape "Del Mazza's Classical and Contemporary Dry Flies". All he sent me was the empty box and the DVD he cut. Notice the mis-spelling on the box? BTW, does anyone know if he is still "with us"? He was a hoot to talk to and quite the character indeed.
