Post by Greg Reynolds »

The latest revision of my database has been posted on my host Richard Alexander's excellent Antique Rod and Reel Library website. There are 509 new rods in a total of 33168.

Thank you to the forum members that have contributed--especially you Paul...

Greg, for the next update, #31732 (unlisted) is a 5ft UL spinning rod like the numbers just prior. Gray bag like the others. I also have #31600, which is a 7ft Deluxe, rather than 6.5ft as listed in the database. Plaid bag, etc as described.

Thanks again Greg for being such an outstanding Orvis reference. The history and details documented are amazing!

I own and fish a few Orvis rods and have shared some details in the past. Here are some "new" ones for the database which were either missing or incorrect (the underlined text is the script on the rod):

10746 Oct 6 1949 8 1/2 5wt? John Rosencrantz "Manchester", "Orvis-Impregnated", "Pat. Pend" 3/2 16/9f 4 3/4oz
Synthane tube, white/black label, olive bag

40528 June 16 1965 9' 8wt? Reid & Skinner "Orvis Impregnated", "Light Salmon" 2/3 16f 6oz
Silver tube, blue gold white label repro, tan bag, 2 3/4" butt extension

68934 April 9 1973 7 1/2 HDG (6) Ron White Orvis Impregnated, Battenkill, 7 1/2' 3 7/8oz, HDG (6) 2/2 12f 3 7/8oz
Al tube, green foil label, green bag, hexagonal labeled cap

75100 Aug 21 1974 7 HDG (6) Ron White Orvis Impregnated, Pack Rod, 7"- 3 7/8oz, HDG (6) 4/2 15/11/9f 3 7/8oz
Gray tube, green bag, hexagonal labeled cap

Hi Spruce,

I checked and have each of these rods (or corrections) on the database, although they may not be online yet. I update twice per year, the next will be about the end of January.

The only thing I didn't change is the date of Pack Fly Rod #75100, which I'm certain is 1975 production. Orvis numbered rods sequentially as they were completed. An August 1974 rod would have a serial number 200-300 earlier.

Thank you...

Good catch, thanks. I have fixed the typo in my personal Orvis database!

Thanks Gary, a rod from Orvis would be nice... :) I probably do save them some money by not having to field as many customer service calls.

I thought I was flying under the Orvis corporate radar, until I found out otherwise in 2012. At the time, this forum was on YUKU, who gave members space on our personal profiles to post things not suited for the open forum. In early 2010, I'd uploaded scans of the about 70 years of Orvis catalog covers to the profile. It got about a hundred views from our members over a few months, then to my surprise, got well over a thousand hits in just a few weeks later that year. I didn't understand until I found this while reading older posts in The Orvis News: https://news.orvis.com/fly-fishing/In-the-Loop-101910

Thank you. You're just in time, I'm sending out an update to host Rich Alexander very soon. I'll announce when it's online.
