Thanks again G-Man,

I come across mixed-up tips fairly frequently, including one yesterday via database E-mail.

BTW, the green-labeled tube is a later replacement. They weren't in use until early 1971.

Regards,
Greg
Thanks Greg!

I was wondering about the tube/color. The rod doesn't show any evidence of repairs, so maybe it went back for a refinish or a new tip and it got a new tube at the same time. It definitely has the correct data on the label, so that's a plus and the rod is in beautiful condition with nothing more than typical grip soiling.

Yeah, I really wish I'd been able to find the rod the mismatched tip went to, but things were pretty hectic at this auction and it didn't pan out. I have a basket case Orvis rod that I've been thinking about sending back to have a tip repaired/replaced and I'm thinking I might see if they can shorten this mismatched tip, add the smaller ferrule and make it work for the basket case rod (I got it super cheap). I'm not sure the taper would be correct, but it might be worth a shot since the color of the cane is very similar.

I think this is my last addition for a while...my wife might stop being so understanding if I'm not careful!

Orvis Battenkill 8' 4 1/8oz, 2/2, HDG (6) serial number 82323. Olive green bag, gray tube with green and silver label, hex cap on the tube. This one is super clean, and almost as nice as the last school rod I got...tried it with both WF5 and WF6 lines tonight doing a little lawn casting. Verdict...we get along just fine!

Thought I submitted this one last year, but it’s not in the database, so maybe I forgot:
Superlight spinning, 5ft 2/1, 11/64ths, foolproof guides, cork/ring grip, #31732

I probably messed-up. It's on the database now and it will appear online in the January update.

Thank you...

It's probably just me, but I can't seem to find the link to the database. Used to be at the bottom of the Board Index. The link in "Link to Orvis Database by Greg Reynolds" under Banjo's section is old.

I can actually get to the database, I have the actual link bookmarked, but was just wondering what happened to the one that used to be here.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Hi Kenneth,

IIRC, Mark (Titelines) had trouble setting-up the link the last time there were changes to the phpBB forum software.

Best,
Greg

At the risk of monopolizing this thread I've got a couple of updates!

58634 - Battenkill, 2/2, 7.5ft, 3 7/8oz, grey bag, aluminum tube with blue, silver and gold label.

I was incredibly lucky to get this paired with a Battenkill Featherweight reel and case that must have been purchased at the same time since the rod is a 1970 and the Young reels weren't around for long. It's like a time capsule from 1970! They both have minor signs of use but it can't have been much since the grip is barely soiled.

88490 - Seven/Four, 3/2, 7ft 3 3/8oz, green back, black tube with gold and black label.

This rod came from the same source and was paired up with a correct vintage CFO III (BFR years). I can't find any signs of use on either the rod or feel and the cork is so clean I can't imagine it was more than lawn cast. The line is perfectly clean and doesn't even have a crease from a leader on the front loop.

Edit, I forgot to check the database...this rod is listed. I'll leave this up in case folks want to see pics.

I saw this on an online auction...didn't win it, but thought it was worth adding here.

It's not a combination I've seen before, but I'm far from an expert.

Manchester, Pat Pen'd, Serial number 10875 with a downlinking reel seat and full Wells grip, but spinning guides....very interesting!

Photos of Dan Reid appeared in either the catalogs or the Orvis News. I did a quick search of my catalogs, but couldn't find it. I don't know if Dan is related to George.
Your memory was correct Greg. I was leafing through my newly acquired Spring 1972 catalog and saw a picture of Dan Reid. As best I can tell, SN/57991, the 8' 4 1/8 oz rod I got was from his collection, and probably why it's such an early number for that model. Pretty cool!
