For your next update, Greg: Seven/three #69328. It slots into the batch made in 1973 and is standard configuration with two tips, 10/64 ferrules, superfine grip, cork and ring seat, green bag, grey aluminum tube, engraved hexagonal cap, green and silver foil label. Rod is in pristine condition. I haven’t cast it yet, since it just arrived this evening, but it feels to me like a nice 2wt on the panfish ponds. Super smooth and feather light. Thanks.

Thanks, Jay. It truly is. After all the negative and ho-hum comments I’ve read over the years, I was shocked at how sublimely well it casts a line. I just love it!

Thanks for the information on the Seven/three plus the photo.

I agree with Jay--it's very dark handsome rod.

Yes, it’s a beautiful example of Orvis’ darker-finish era. I’ve had the opportunity to put some lines on it since the other day, and it’s most definitely a 3wt in my hands. Casting a wf2 is possible, but no more delicate due to the faster casting tempo required, and less accurate than with a 3wt line. Like the Seven/four, it seems Orvis rated this one just right.

Additional fly rod for the Orvis Database. This fly rod's serial number is listed in the database yet needs specific features of 70978 made in 1973. Fly rod is an Orvis Flea 6' 6" 2/2 model with all cork reel seat and aluminum slide bands. This rod was ordered with the upgraded leather case option. It remains in excellent condition. Inscribed: Orvis Impregnated Flea HFG (4) 2 1/8 oz along with the late owners name. Beautiful example of an Orvis fly rod of this vintage

Additional fly rod for the Orvis Database...
Thanks for the details & photos. It's in beautiful condition.

I don't know the exact date, but Orvis rod production was relocated from 74 Union Street in Manchester Village to the current location on Historic Route 7A in August of 1973. So, Flea #70978 was either among the last made in the old shop, or one of the first made in the current shop.

Greg,

Enjoyed the history you noted as well as the vintage photographs from Manchester. Reminds me of visits to town in my youth during fishing trips on the Battenkill.

That's odd. I checked the database and none of them were listed. I just went through the list again and didn't see any of them listed. Is that the difference between the published list and what you're working on for the next update?

Gotcha...I just didn't want to waste your time sorting through duplicates :)

A (possible!) new one:

SN 73598, Battenkill, 7', 3 3/8 oz, 2/2, green sock, aluminum tube with green and silver label with hex cap.

Thanks G-man,

I check eBay and about 15-17 dealer sites very frequently and do web searches and check tackle auctions less frequently. I rarely check Craig's List and local ads.

I don't mind getting duplicates. I get quite a few additions from you, Joe U. and other forum members. The curator for the AMFF sends me Orvis information as they come into the museum.

Best...

For Greg Reynolds--
Two rods recently acquired at below-market prices, definite misfits and possible fraudsters but requiring mention--
"Orvis Special", 8-1/2 foot 3/2, varnished, ferrules are 14+/10, marked #2032. Butt ferrule has a strange thick welt. Wraps orange-red.
"Orvis Impregnated"/ "Special", 6-1/2 foot 2/1, ferrule 13, marked #15555. Wraps red, like a 99.
Neither has a bag or tube of any significance. Both serial numbers are already listed for other rods, but these numbers and the writing on the 6-1/2 footer, seem authentic. Sorry to break into the sequence.
Regards,

I just sent you a PM with some information

If possible and if it's not a bother, please post a couple of photos of each rod including the inscriptions.

Thank you...
