What a great thread this is. Here are the three old Sunbeams with the horseshoe latch, first appearing in 1924. The telephone latch apparently came in later in the late 30s. The reel was a budget reel for the House of Hardy, and lasted till "withdrawn from service" in 1957. I like them because they're a little odd, and I can put up with the design flaw -- loose loops of line may catch between the spool and Bickerdyke line guard (so I underfill my reels and pay attention as I fish). I sold off largest 3" at left, but kept the 3" and 2 3/4" (and bought another 2 3/4" just because).

The 2 3/4" pictured, with the filed foot, has been abroad with me to Britain and Japan. It's an old pal.

Those Sumbeams are just the best. So elegant - and yet so simple.

And the lineup of Perfects would be incredible to fish with as well. Those with the white handles turn my crank!

Take a look at the Sage 500 series reels comparison post above.
Spools below show different cast edges of the same model.
Did you know ? A Sunbeam spool fits right up to a Sage 506!

With the passing of the Queen last month, and seeing this post again, I thought it might be time to post a couple of sibling reels.

First came Prince George, courtesy of Vlad Rechenko and Chris Henshaw. Then came Princess Charlotte from Vlad. I'm hoping Vlad is still safe from the war in the Ukraine.

My season has ended, unfortunately, so much more tying to come. & some maintenance. I cleaned my Bauers, not (yet) classic. All purchased new, the first ones way back when Jon Bauer was in Salinas, where I was born! So, all the road rash & dings are mine! But they function mechanically as new, including the absolute silent retrieve.
