Favourite whisky or whiskey

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Contradiction Bourbon - it is a blend of wheated and rye and is fairly complex, smooth sipping neat and moderately priced. Noble Oak double oaked is also a great bourbon thet is aged with sherry staves and actually is a departure from standard bourbon as it has a scotch note in the middle and is a very smooth sipper.

While growing up (during college) I drank Scotch when available. Many years ago, however, I made the switch to American Bourbons and have never looked back.

Have you tried "Dry Fly" from Washington state? Mm-m-m-m good. Neat bottle, too! ;)

Ancient Age is pretty good in my opinion and very reasonably priced. A little pricier but worth it is Makers Mark.

Tracks and Rails bourbon from NJ's own Claremont Distillery. Their rye whiskey isn't half bad either.

Irish
Bushmills aged in this order 21,10,16
Black Bush
Red breast 15
Green, Yellow and Red Spots

For scotch i'm partial to speysides, Glenmorangie Yellow label is great bang for your buck, or if you're splurging, some Caribbean cask from Balvenie
Also like a sip of Islays too, Laphroaig 10 is particularly good in an Old Fashioned cocktail!

American
Woodford Reserve Bourbon and Rye are my staples.

I may have made a mistake by getting my son interested in fine cigars and single malt, he now has a collection that rivals a bottle shop. About 30 different makes/distillers
I do enjoy catching up and spending time with him :skoal :pipe .

I recall this question being asked in this venue something more than 20 years ago, and I'll give you the same answer I gave then: The Famous Grouse. Cheers.

Everyday single malt: Springbank 10
Special occasion single malt: Macallan 18

Been moving away from Scotch to American rye the last couple of years.
Rye,neat: Whistlepig, High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye in an Old Fashioned: High West Double Rye

Decided to try Irish and am currently enjoying a bottle of Redbreast 12.

If you like Irish, try and find Clontarf green or black label.

Walkers' shortbread in a bottle!

I like the Whiskey (usually Whisky) that is in my glass and more often than not go for an Islay Scotch, but I keep enough others around to satisfy those who shy away from Peat/Heavy smoke of the Isaly malts. If you like Isaly, it is hard to beat Laphroiag 10 or Ardbeg Ten for value!

Try to buy at least 43% for the best flavors; avoid really old Bourbons (10+) as they get woody due to the requirement of using new oak barrels. Grab yourself a Glencairn glass and enjoy neat!

Cheers,
Joe

Just found this old post but it’s worth continuing.

Although I enjoy scotch, I’m a bourbon guy.

A very good one but sometimes difficult to find is Tryconnel single malt, smooth and flavorful.

Hard to call a favorite, and there’s the sippers and then there’s special occasion sippers, but sor far for bourbons it’s probably Woodford reserve double oaked with Old Forester 1910 a close second. For scotch VERY special occasion it’s a 17-year-old Lagavulin, otherwise Bowmore small-batch, which has gotten hard to find.

Whisky is not spelled with an “e”. My preference is single malt highland sherry cask aged. Glendronach 12,15,and 18 fit the bill. Bourbon, Rye, or Sourmash just does not measure up for me.
