Seeing these comments, I read Earth is Enough only to realize it was the same author as the impressionable book On the Spine of Time, which I truly enjoyed as my formal exploration into fly fishing happened in the Blue Ridge Mts.

Keith McCafferty - they're mystery books but based in Montana and always with a healthy dose of fishing
These are good as is any of the murder mystery books from McCafferty. Check the murder myseries from John Holt or David Leitz. And, there's usually a neat little affair going on between the main character and some sweet little lady. Just fun reading. :)

A few classics:
Man May Fish - T.C. Kingsmill Moore
A River Never Sleeps - R. Haig-Brown
Where the Bright Waters Meet - H. Plunket Greene
A Summer on the Test - J.W. Hills
Autumns on the Spey - A.E. Knox
Gone Fishing - N. Farson
Fishless Days and Angling Nights - A. Miller

For contemporary authors, try starting with J. Babb and T. Leeson.

Also worthy of note is Gray’s Sporting Journal…

I found the book, "What the Trout Said" by Datus Proper a fascinating dive into the mind of a trout.

A newer release that I've just started reading is The Optimist: A Case for the Fly Fishing Life By David Coggins. It's an excellent read, highly recommended.

Going Fishing by Negley Farson

Farson introduces his 1942 masterpiece: "This is just the story of some rods and the places they take you to." A foreign correspondent between the wars, Farson worked all over the world, accompanied by a typewriter and his fishing rods. Where there was water, he fished, and in spare and vivid prose, he brought to life his adventures in revolutionary Russia, on horseback in the Caucasus, or living hand to mouth in British Columbia. As a fishing and travel book it is the original and the best.

Please help me with some more fly fishing book recommendations.

Books so far I have liked

“ a river runs through it” of course A+

“The river why” A+

“ the earth is enough” A+

“ the snow fly” A

“Holding lies” A

“Longest silence” A-

“Back cast” A-

Listened to all and read most of John Gierach’s stuff

All the rest I wouldn’t recommend or read again.

Any advice on what I could read next?

Thanks in advance!

Many great books were written in the Uk in the late 1800 and early 1900. G.E.M Skues were one of the writers don´t miss him. Her´s another, I think its one of the best, Fly Fishing by lord Grey of Fallowdon, no tecnic, no tackle but you learn so much about the fishing, the soul of fishing etc. Its a must book ! It came out 1899 for the first time, great to read that ed. but even greater to find one from later times. In 1930s ed. and later Lord Grey added two extra chapters to his original book and these two chapter are so wonderful reading and sad too. Read and you will understand.
Fly fishing by Lord Grey can be found in many ed. paperback and bound. Good hunting !

In addition to the great suggestions above, I would recommend:
River Music by James Babb- Well written book by the previous editor of Gray's Sporting journal
Fly-fishing around the world on the 41st parallel by James Prosek- Very interesting fly fishing adventure as the title says fishing around the world on a life quest.

Farson is addicting. Each volume sends you on a search for the next. He was in so many places when momentous events occurred that it boggles the imagination.

He should be much better known.
