Is there a recommended place, other than eBay, to find excellent quality Orvis classic CFO reels and/or spare spools for sale ?.

They show up on this forum's classifieds from time to time, and various bamboo rod dealers will get them. You have to be diligent and keep looking at the classifieds and dealer lists regularly if you want to find something specific. Listed items can be sold within hours sometimes.

Dealers to watch include Classic Fly Fisherman, Spinoza Rods, Brandin Split Cane and The Jordan Mills Rod Company, all with active websites.

CFO's are popular reels, particularly the Hardy made reels that Orvis offered from 1971 to 1994. Happy hunting!

I say - do use eBay

Broken and beaten - the CFO can look like garbage on the outside and work flawlessly.
Once you take a few apart and make your own marks by accident on a few reels...

After you pay some dues, then you are ready for a nice one or four, they are easy to get smooth.
Open the floodgates and get one in every size.

Ten toes ? Ten reels...soon you have one for everybody in your neighborhood. :rollin

I will gladly fish a dirty CFO over a clean brand new garbage reel made today.

A shame to see how people have mistreated a fine reel like the V. You are right though, they still fish beautifully, even without a finish. I have about five IV's now from Screwback to Bar Stock and they were generally well cared for before they came to me. Ever found anyone who refinishes the older enameled reels? One of mine does have a bubble or two in the enamel.

Is the finish damage on the V as pictured due to saltwater use?

Most likely wet from regular freshwater use - and then put in leather bag as possibly instructed on original CFO paperwork.
With wet line and backing... the condensation caused issues in storage - many never knew until next time they looked.

And the 1975 Impala wagon window leaked too... maybe nothing ever dried out.

I had a St Aiden that did not fair well in tide water.
But that was my due to my own negligence.
