Dave Whitlock interview - up close, great readin!

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Brian, thanks for the post. I ,like many others have followed Dave Whitlock for years. From his fly patterns to his writing & of course his great art work. Got to meet him in person once too. He was very personable . I have a signed print from him & it is one of my favorite things. He is a classy guy for sure .

About twenty five years ago, I watched Dave fish a spot on the White called Rim Shoals.
He caught a fish on every drift.
he may never stop

If you can find it (I think they hid it or destroyed because I'm in it), amff did (well, me and a former trustee's money did it, actually) a wonderful, several hours long round-table discussion that included Whitlock, Kreh, Apt, Schullery, and several other folks) that is really fun and informative. Especially when Whitlock describes how he got into fly fishing as a boy.
Gary

RIP, Dave.

News of Dave’s passing saddens me greatly. 30 years ago I was looking for information on how to fly fish for largemouth bass in Lake Perris, Southern California. Bob Slamal at Riverside Ski & Sport handed me a VHS tape from Dave Whitlock that explained the technique. I took my float tube and fly rod to the lake and enjoyed success fly fishing close to home for many years after. I was able to meet him and tell him so at Bob Marriott’s store and had him sign a book for me.

A couple of years ago I met him again at Sowbug Roundup and told him again what an influence he’d been.

RIP sir, you are fondly remembered.
...as for us we pin our faith and fealty to the silk-wound PENTAGONAL rod cunningly yet simply devised of its FIVE subtle, individual triangular strips of cane throughout...

Everyone who ever met and talked to Dave has a story of their own to tell. I met him 40 years ago at the Southern Council Conclave in Mt. Home Arkansas. He was tying his famous sculpin pattern with the prairie chicken pectoral fins. I wrote to him after the event to inquire where you could get some prairie chicken feathers; Of course his answer was to send me 12 match pair to use. I met him again when we were using his Whitlock -Vibert boxes on the white river. A great man for the sport who will be sorely missed

MEN - just for that last photo.

We just lost Tom - owner of Wapsi Fly in Mountain Home AR.
May he also rest in peace.

His efforts are mountainous... what he gave every fly tier today.

I was lucky to one day see Dave at Wapsi Fly while there on a a tour.
Saw what he was picking up too - every color of pine squirrel stripped and barred!!
The good old days of 2001.

Thanks so kindly to all of you who have given to this page. :D
