On a Catskill trip back in the early eighties we visited Walt Carpenter at his shop in Chester NY. I don’t know if he did it as a matter of course but he sold me one of his graphite rods with NS ferrules. I turned it back to him at the end of the trip. It just felt odd.

Well, not exactly "before spigot," but the US version of Hexagraph rods used nickel silver ferrules until a few years ago. Hexagraph rods are hexagonal and were made from sheet graphite laminated to closed cell foam. That material was cut into strips like bamboo and glued together like bamboo strips. Hexagraph rods may still be made in the UK for coarse fishing.

Bruce and Walker made Hexagraph tryrods show up at auction from time to time. Two have been offered in recent weeks. They go for considerably less than the US versions.
