trout spey help

The exchange of tapers forum is for classic and personally developed tapers. The definition of classic tapers are those tapers that were developed by rodmakers that are no longer alive. Please understand that rod makers who have developed their tapers, and are active in the community, should not have their tapers cloned, or shared, without their permission, please refrain for asking for those tapers as it infringes on the maker.

trout spey help

#1

Post by albertatroutguy »

I'm thinking of trying to build another trout spey rod. I have a some scandi and skagit style lines from 200 to 325 gr and would like to build something that works within that range. My first attempt was a taper I made up in rodDNA without knowing anything about tapers or spey casting. I'm not sure how it turned out without trying out other rods. I went through rodDNA and there is a 5 and 7 wt T.M. Zeitner switch/spey rods. I didn't find much on Zeinter rods. Has anyone built these rods?

Would I be better off building something for the low 400's grain weight? I'm not sure what I would fish for with that weight but there are some proven tapers in that weight range.

Below is my taper. I now think the whole rods needs to be thicker

I like the (shape of) that taper, but my deflection routine suggests it is a lightish 4 wt...

Did you try that rod with a 350-375 gr. line? If so, how did it work?

I didn't try it with 350 - 375 gr. line. I think the 325 gr. was too heavy. I'm not a very good spey caster so I'm never sure what line weight is optimal. I do prefer skagit over the scandi.
