Northern Rodmakers Gathering Sept 22-24, 2022
Re: Northern Rodmakers Gathering Sept 22-24, 2022
#2Which Northern are you talking about?
Is that Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, or Vermont type of Northern?
Is the state of Michigan still in the Fly Fishers Union? Or has it dried up all the rivers.

#5Beautiful photo essay. Thanks for putting that together. Just one question. What do we do to get young faces in the crowd? I would venture to say in another twenty years rod making will be a lost art.

#6I am neither a rod maker or young (late forties) but I do have a couple thoughts. Younger people might have kids at home and activities like this might be tough to attend. I could not get away just for a day trip, even when I live just 3 1/2 hours away. Also, it can be intimidating for a newbie to these type of gatherings.
Nonetheless, my thoughts are more related to attendance and your concern is focused on younger makers. Maybe if more makers would offer rod building classes, you could attract younger people to carry on the tradition. Although I venture to guess the students in these type of classes are also empty nesters with more free time to pick a hobby that might turn to be a "profession".
Buying rods from small makers could also help. All my rods, with the exception of one, are from one man shops that I have talked to, even if I bought the rods' used from a dealer or this forum.
Anyway, just some ideas from a newbie.

#13Well Alexis and I just got back from a wonderful trip to the Driftless and the NRG. Many thanks to Scott, Gordon, Dave, and everyone at the Gathering who made us feel welcome. The presentations were great and we learned a lot about bamboo we never knew. Thoroughly enjoyable, pig roast was tasty, and freindly folks. looking forward to seeing Yaz's video of weekend.

#14I had a ball at the gathering! The pig roast was excellent, the company of gentlemen and ladies radiating, and I got to cast some very fine rods, and even help and encourage with fly-casting instruction as well! Thank you all for inviting me yet again! I even had the privilege of guiding a few of the builders in the Driftless. Good times! cannot wait for next year!
