List of books about rod makers/brands?

#1

Post by G-ManBart »

Hey all,

I promise I did a search, but didn't find what exactly what I was looking for so I'm asking for some assistance.

I've read Splitting Cane by Engle, and have Colorado Classic Cane inbound as a start. I'm looking to put together a list of books on rod makers to buy or keep an eye out for. I'd love recommendations to add to the list, and hopefully it can help someone else in the future. Thanks in advance!

Here's what I'm aware of now:

- The Compleat Paul H. Young, by Deanne L. Young
- A Fly Rod With a Soul, E.C. Powell, by Per Brandin.
- Forgotten Fly Rods by Todd E.A. Larson.
- Howells by Joseph H. Beelart, Jr.
- Jordan the Rodmaker by William. H. Jordan
- Sewell N. Dunton and the Montague City Rod & Reel Company by John A. Spear
- Playing with Fire, E.W. Edwards, by Patrick C. Garner
- Heddon the Rod with the Fighting Heart, Michael Sinclair
- Winston Letters, by Lew Stoner
- Dickerson, The Man and His Rods, by Gerald S. Stein

Did this book ever get printed? It seemed there were a lot of preorders that never received their book.

You can't leave out Casting a Spell: The Bamboo Fly Rod and the American Pursuit of Perfection by George Black.

IMO, not his best work, but a lot of people seem to like Gierach's Fishing Bamboo.

No, it's been hanging out there for about 10 years but it hasn't made it to print.

Rolf Baginski's beautiful book, Split Cane Rods- Bamboo Treasures. Radical Rodmaking (Larson I think). Bamboo: Fact, Fiction and Fly Rods by Milward. I think we're getting more into how-to with the last one but I was lucky on a day I happened into Fisherman's Spot in Van Nuys and scored Volumes 1 and 2 in addition to a couple of books by George Barnes.

I guess not! I looked at the website and it showed something about December of 2021, so I thought they were going to press. Then I saw how long the pre-order thing has been around, so I have no idea. Hopefully it will get resolved as I'm sure a lot of folks would be eager to read it.

This thread is going to wind up costing me a fortune, but it will be worth it. I've got three more books inbound and I think I've decided on the next couple to add as well. At some point I'll probably do a compilation post with an updated list so they're all in one place.

Thanks for all the input so far!

Hi Guys, If I wanted a book with a good discussion and great pictures to identify with I'd get the Hatton book. It's hard to beat. I've got 'em all.........
