Orvis Battenkill Cane Fly Rod with serial number 9558

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Make sure you include the length, number of sections, any identifying markings and the general condition. Adding photographs is always helpful!

Contact Orvis. Provide them the serial number and they will give you all the information about the rod, when it was made, who made it, length, line weight etc.etc.

Orvis #9558 is an 8-foot, 4 1/2-oz, 3-piece Battenkill with 16/64 & 10/64 ferrules. Cal Skinner made the blank and the rod was completed on 10/26/50.

A copy & paste from my notes:
"The 8-foot, 4 ½-oz, 16/64 & 10/64-ferrule taper is a Wes Jordan design with a medium-action. Orvis recommended HDH or HDG silk lines line for the rod though 1967, which are about equivalent to synthetic DT6 or WF6 lines. From 1968 through 1976, the line recommendation was changed to WF7. In 1977, the recommendation reverted to WF6 line.

It was cataloged by 1948 and was made through 1992. During the tapers production life, it available in Battenkill (1940s-1992), Manchester (1940s-1955) and "125" (1982-1985) grades."

See this thread for the 1950 catalog:

Greg,

Apologies for the time it took, but I've managed to finally get it back also on the bottom of the main page of the forum.

It came back quite by accident. I was fixing something else and lo and behold, there it was again. Can't really take the credit for that, but I'm glad to see the links to both yours and Bob's databases back in action.

I agree with Short Tip, Mark! And, I'm really glad to see it back at the bottom of the Main Page.

Thanks!
