Can anyone tell me who made this rod?

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Make sure you include the length, number of sections, any identifying markings and the general condition. Adding photographs is always helpful!

Can anyone tell me who made this rod?

Post by 1OldKid »

Looking for information about this rod, I'm certain someone here has one, or can recognize the piece of remaining label. Will try to post pics...
What I know:
9' long, with extra tip, some repairs.
The script in gold color says "Clearwater".
can't see any other marks...
each section is 36 1/2 "
has 6 segments
I bought this rod at a garage sale some 23 years ago, never yet tried to fish it.
Always figured I would try it when I learned some patience and got older. Looking at myself in the mirror now, it's time! :lol
Thanks for any help,
Roy

My guess is that it was made by Montague for Sharpleigh's, a store from Kansas City.

I'm thinking an Edwards trade rod with a couple replaced females.
The script is classic. Maybe Horton Bristol.

The Shapleigh Hardware Company was founded in 1843 by Augustus F. ... They wanted to open another store out west and so the Rodger, Shapleigh and Company store began in St. Louis, MO. They changed the name to Shapleigh, Day and Company in 1847 when Rodgers passed away.

I am sort of leaning in that direction, considering also that the tube is the type that Horton-Edwards rods came in. That said, the tube looks too long and could be a coincidental replacement.

Montague ferrules and a version of a Montague reel seat. So Montague made, IMHO.

As others have stated, Montague, reel seat is one of the typical hardware "upgrades" setting the rod up-range from the lower-quality offerings, cane looks like the low to mid grade "general production" stuff, yellow (white) scripting was also found on other mid to higher range rods in late 30s through the years just after the war, I am personally not familiar with the source of information regarding the trade retailer so cannot comment, but it has often fascinated me, perhaps we could start a thread on industry-wide trade rods and concurrently provide documentation that supports the determination, Todd

Thanks guys, appreciate your thoughts and comments!
Somewhere, someone mentioned that the rod sock color might indicate that this could be a trade rod since it is blue, not tan or green...
And it does fill up the tube about 1/4 inch from the top once stuffed in. Roy

The definition of a trade rod is when a production company makes a rod for a third party, in this case Montague for Shapleigh Hardware in St. Louis. So yes, it is a trade rod.
