It's all about timing. :)

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

It's all about timing. :)

I walked into the local fly shop today for an insignificant item I was out of. The clerk, who I won't mention, says to me "Hey Mark we just got that shipment of Whiting hackle in this morning. Interested?" Sure, I said. Then he stated that what he was about to show me won't last the day. I said your right 'cause they're going home with me. It's all about timing. :) So, if you folks are looking for Cree hackle then I'd get out to your local fly shop because Whiting just released the new supply. The Cree won't last the day. :)
Mark

These are the items I picked up today. I'll take all the Cree I can find......

Score. I’ve got enough Cree to last a lifetime. Too bad because these new necks and saddles are incredible.

Yo Mark, Yowsa! And to think Herter's used to sell those 'Variants' for cheap because the color wasn't true.

Yea sure, It's only two minutes from my home. I've been going there since they opened as the "Family Fly Shop" 5-6 years ago. That's where I got these Cree. The business just recently changed hands this year to become the "Bozeman Fly Supply". They're good, as is the shop in Billings for materials.

Yea, that's a concern. But I'm careful as to not buying Cree that washes out when turned on the hook. These, as with several others I have, don't wash out. That's a real concern regarding Cree and many other colors as well. One needs to look carefully before buying these. It's simple to do. Just open the bag and turn a few feathers over your finger and hold against a light to back light them. That will tell you how fast the color of the feathers are.

When shopping online it’s impossible to judge them yourself. Not to mention the ‘waiting line’ behind you

Having a fly shop at walking distance from home is a luxury. I have to drive at least 45 min to a decent shop.

Timing can be magic! I used to get emails from Blue Ribbon Flies and back when the rock and roll fashion "hair hackle" thing was over I got one saying they just had a shipment come in from Whiting Farms with some beautiful Cree capes and saddles. I picked up the phone immediately and got a gorgeous Hebert/Miner cape that lets me tie 2 or 3 flies from a 16 or 18 feather.

So the world has gone crazy. No not the invasion of Ukraine, but even fly shops selling Cree at insane prices.
