Montague Fishkill
#1Hello, recently purchased a 7 1/2' Monty Fishkill. Haven't had a chance to even lawn cast it yet...1° with a wind chill of 14 below this am. Anyhow, I've always fished a DT line with my glass and bamboo....what do you think - 4 or 5wt? Or even a 3wt?

Re: Montague Fishkill
#3Depends - either a 4 or 5 or a 6 , all depends on which 7 1/2 Fishkill taper. I have handled multiple tapers on 7 1/2 Fishkills - only generality is that they tend to be heavier with later models..
Enjoy - beautiful rods once guides are added...

#5Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions. I was thinking of replacing all the guides and re-varnishing...can someone suggest number of guides and spacing? Thank you again, Lou

#7NewUtahCaneAnger, I chose this rod as opposed to another available because mine has 5 guides plus the tip-top, the other, though in much newer condition, had only 4 guides on the tip pieces. Both rods 2 piece, 2 tips. 7 1/2 ft.

#9All the Fishkills I have seen had a green blue spacer but cedar sounds nice if you’re changing everything else.

Re: Montague Fishkill
#12I own 2 and a 1/2 7'6" Fishkills. The "half" has no tips, but I can swap a tip from one of my others. Start with a 5WF and then try a 4DT and/or 4WF. I think a lot depends upon your casting style and which brand fly line too. My first one was purchased some 30 years ago and is still one of my favorite rods.

Re: Montague Fishkill
#13My Fishkill was best with a DT6; still sorry I traded it away! It'd be nice to find one with a taper for a lighter line--apparently those made earlier rather than later in Monty history. Appreciate the advice on adding guides.

#14I dug into my Montague rods and discovered I also own a 7'6" Rapidan (2/2) that differs from a Fishkill in wrap colors (Yellow/Purple tipping & white reel seat spacer) and has rolled welt chrome NS ferrules. Taper seems identical to the Fishkill taper.
