YouTube tyers

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

YouTube tyers

Who should I be watching on YouTube? I’m interested in learning good/better techniques, not necessarily patterns, for traditional trout flies. Someone who explains the why of material prep and treatment and the tying techniques, not just the what.

+1 on Davie McPhail I find him the best in terms of explaining what he is doing and demonstration. He is in Scotland so does a variety of salmon and trout flies.

Orvis puts out a really good series on basic (and not so basic) techniques that may be right up your alley.

Easily, it's Hans Weilenmann. Best single source I know for technique and material handling tips, both traditional and inovative. Lots of good patterns, too.

Davie McPhail is great. As far as improving skills, Tim Flagler at Tightlines always has interesting ways of doing things and is great at actually teaching, which isnt true for all internet tyers.

Dave McPhail is very good, but my go-to is Tim Flagler at Tightlines. I also like the InTheRiffle series.

Great interview of Tim Flagler by The New Fly Fisher if you want to learn about the man behind the vise (and camera).

I like Barry Ord Clark and Hans Weilennman. McPhail is hard to understand so when I watch him I turn the audio off.

It definitely takes getting used to somebody saying “offur tha dubbin te tha huuk”

Try Tommy Solberg if you really want to not understand a thing in the video.

Thanks for the leads. I have watched some McPhail videos and learned (or maybe relearned) some techniques. I will check out some others, Flagler, Wellennman etc see what clicks for me.

At my age the problem is remembering tomorrow what I learn today. One day I picked up my whip finisher and my mind went blank. I had no idea how to use it.

That’s the beauty of YouTube. Don’t have to remember a thing. Keep your iPad by your tying desk. Pause and rewind to your heart’s delight.

His videos are short, spot-on, excellent tips and I love the opening music.

Mc Phail is also my favorite, and if in the mood for Scotland, try watching the series Shetland on Amazon Prime. Great, very well done series, and it makes Davie McPhail's videos sound easy to understand.

I like watching Matt - Savage Flies
he's pretty casual about materials and techniques so it gives me confidence to try stuff
