I prefer spar varnish on rods and have used a number of brands over the years, Man o' War, Sutherland Wells, P&L 98 and Vitralite, Epifanes...
Any thoughts on what current brand offers the darkest amber color?

#2Darkest I’ve used was Ace Hardware brand Spar Varnish. It’s really good stuff

#3Any brand you desire. Just add analine dye or try Transtint brand dyes if still available. Test first. Make sure product is dye, not pigment.

#5Waterlox makes a Marine finish that is Dark Brown - Very Dark.

#7Thanks, all. I’ve been meaning to test Ace Hardware spar. Just the push needed for me to pick some up.
For those using Waterlox, have you been using both the Marine Sealer plus the Marine Gloss in combination, or just one of them?

#8another option: Milk Paint makes a dark pure tung oil.

This could be applied as the 1st coat, (thinned with turpentine)
and then your normal spar varnish over the top of that.
