Your other interests or hobbies

Good morning!

It's the middle of winter here, so my obsession with bamboo rods and vintage reels has taken a bit of a back seat to one of my other interests - building copies of antique (c. 1780) flintlock rifles. Here's a couple of pictures of the one I'm currently working on. I'm entering the home stretch on this rifle, working on the carving behind the cheek piece.

Got me thinking: What are your other interests or hobbies?

Outstanding Craftsmanship! Black Walnut? I used to build self and bamboo backed flat and longbows and at 66 after having made just over 80 total have left the draw knife and rasp idle. I have materials for a few more and seeing beautiful creations like this is inspiring. Love to see the finished product.
I'm sure it'll be stunning!

Thanks! The wood is a very curly piece of sugar maple. When stained with iron nitrate, these stripes should POP:

Archery and--once upon a time, bow making--are probably more important to me than fishing or flintlock making:

Photography and acoustic guitars. Thankfully, the photography hobby intersects nicely with the classic fishing gear and guitars which are both beautiful subjects to shoot. Ron. @dryflyphotography

I didn't think the grain structure was porous enough for Walnut but some Claro I've seen is very tight grained and ranges from blonde to almost black.
Acer Saccharum makes a great bow - I can't imagine it is easy to manipulate such intricate carving - sharp tools I bet? That is going to be a Nice stock!

Beautifully composed photos - Great eye and technique!

Neat thread - lot of talent out there. Hopefully more to follow.

Yes…super sharp tools are the key.

I’m looking forward to seeing more peoples’ posts, too!

If you haven't seen it here is an older video of how the colonist built flintlocks from making the barrel, lock, trigger, springs, casting the brass fittings, carving the stock. Quite detailed and shows how many skills were needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTy3uQFsirk

The range of skills and technics to make a flintlock from barrel to ball is impressive.

Pretty much sticking to creating shadow boxes and tying flies for them until April when I head to the Miramichi again.

I collect baseball cards, 1949 Bowman to be exact.
Was my Dads collection and I am trying to complete it; someday.

I love the game.

Pretty interesting how many folks here on the forum are into older weapons.
I have hunted with a 'flinter and a longbow for many years. Made a pile of longbows and recurves and a handful of black powder long guns.
Owned a traditional archery shop back in the 90's.
Another member, Jim Curlee, made a living for years making high quality tapered wooden arrows and still makes a darn nice longbow and well as a few 'flinters.
