Neroda Fly Boxes

or however that dang word is written! : ) Use this forum to discuss those things that are related to, directly, or indirectly, fly fishing, i.e., tackle, catalogs, single malt scotch, cigar preferences, pipes, camera gear, etc. This is sort of an off topic area but one related to bamboo and fly fishing.

Neroda Fly Boxes

Curious, why are the Hardy Neroda Fly Boxes so valuable? Two just sold on an auction site. One for $165. and the other for $355. I don't get it. They're just a fly box. Please, someone bring me up to speed here.

You're right--they are just a fly box. But they don't make 'em any more, lots of people collect Hardy, and if you want one, you'll pay a lot for them. Same with some vintage Wheatley boxes--functionally no different from the current ones--just a lot more valuable in the marketplace.

Like a lot of other items associated with fly fishing and tackle collecting, the early Hardy Neroda fly boxes are truly "classic" and as such, they command significant prices on the secondary market.

In fact, even the more recent re-issued (1990s/2000s) Neroda boxes are getting somewhat hard to find and more valuable.
In any case, I, for one, like them both!

They could be more brittle than others... that came out after.

The material itself doesn't take to getting dropped on rock.

Is anyone 3D printing fly boxes to order yet? My kid needs a job... I'm thinking Bonnand green to start.

Flippant, but serious newb question. I only own less than 100 (Driftless) flies, and seek to keep it that way, or so. So, am I doing it wrong? I want just 2 small boxes on the water. I find that i can only make 3-4 changes per outing anyway. if that.
Maybe it's best to work backwards. How many fly changes do you make in 6-8hrs?

What do minimalists do who catch tons of trout?
Separate ephemera topic, I am sure. I will post my own thread when my new setup is complete, but I have 2 vintage Bonnands now, and that's really it... I just wish box2 was 1"thick. Stuff is way too expensive.
My fantasy is to marry a few Catskill dry fly classics with Driftless designs, and small streamers, and then take my medicine.

Immediate about-face to 3D printed boxes? Any links?
Thanks for reading.

Bought this one a number of years ago. Cool box but the Bakelite seems a bit fragile now. I think one drop on the rocks and it would crack. It now sits on my shelf.

I’ve picked up a few, mainly in salmon sizes, over the past two years. Love ‘em. They are a real connection to the past but still useable artifacts. One of the ones I bought came with an almost full complement of flies that really made me wonder where it had spent it’s life. Pic below.

Sometimes they sell for less than $70. Sometimes even on the same day :-)

Sometimes the flies in the box add considerably to the selling price of one Neroda box over another.. As far as why the high prices? Supply and demand. These boxes are attractive, somewhat rare, some are vintage and very useable on the river today. You can fish with a piece of history. If the train of thought "it's only a fly box" is used, why do some fly reels sell for $1000. and some for $25. they both just hold fly line right?
