#1Hello to all in the fly fishing world!
My name is Phillip and I’m delighted to join in your discussion forum. The family is headed to Shelton Laurel Creek in Madison County, NC at the end of March and it will be the first time fishing with my two boys Henry (6) and Edmund (3). My wife might come along but she might stay at camp and read a book. We plan to tent camp at Greenheart Forest and also hike to Max Patch bald the next day for some family photos. We also have a new gsp puppy that we plan to take along.
Any recommendations on taking the young ones out? I really just plan on giving them an introduction.
Thanks and cheers!
Phillip

#2Hello and welcome to CFRF Phillip,
I recommend taking a vintage Orvis and do encourage your wife to join you and your boys. As for the young GSP, keep him/her away from the rod!
Cheers, joe

#3Oh yeah Joe! Thanks for the rod by the way! Good tips, all good tips! I’ll try to share a pic later from the trip
Last trip before entering the Army. Let’s hope it’s not WWIII soon.

#4Welcome, Phillip! It sounds like you ha e planned a great family outing. My only tip is to remember that everything is new and exciting to them at that age. So, try to see the "fishing trip" through their eyes, be prepared for short attention spans, have snacks, and be ready to go-with-the-flow.
And, good luck as you enter the Army!

#5Thanks a lot for the tips Headwaters! Yes, my boys love snacks and high expectations of parents can cause frustration. “Try to see the fishing trip through their eyes” good stuff.
Thanks again and should be heading to MEPS any day now. Delayed entry until April.

#9Phillip--
The smiles in your photos indicate to me that it was a very successful "fishing trip!! I see more of them in your future. Man, I haven't seen the "MEPS" acronym in years!
Enjoy!

#10Thanks munsey w and headwaters!
Munsey W, UNC, great school! They are getting it done as usual in the NCAA bball tourney. I bet your daughter is having fun with that.
Headwaters, yes, smiles all around. Great trip we had before I enter the Army.
