Heddon trade rod "Westfield River" ?

This is the board to ask about the identity, or for an appraisal, of a rod. Please use the outline as explained on the board. If there is a makers name, list that in the subject line. Heddon trade rod "Westfield River" ?

#1

Post by Ray Hencken »

Does anyone have any knowledge of a trade rod by Heddon inked "Westfield River"? The rod has a downlocking reel seat with the patent number 1624.... found on Heddon reel seats. The rod is 8 1/2', 3/2, one short tip. The reel seat spacer is a marbled olive color. The guide wraps that remain are gold tipped black. Any information would be appreciated.

Made for Carlisle Hardware Co., which I believe was in Indiana. Circa mid-1930's up until as late as WWII.

Carlisle Hardware had a store in Springfield Ma. The Westfield river is close by, and runs thru West Springfield Ma.
I owned one and fished the Westfield River in my youth. That was a long time ago, really long time ago.
As I remember the store closed in the early 1980's.

Any Montague traits on your rod? Winding check? Ferrules?

If it carries the patent #1624052 it's Heddon, for sure.

Hey Ray,
Could you supply some photos of the rod? It would be most appreciated.

Carlisle Hardware was a chain in the greater Springfield, Ma ( Western Mass area , above Hartford Ct) if not larger. Westfield had a store on Rt 20 ( Ace/‘Rocky’s Hardware up until recently) and Westfield is obviously the river namesake and that of the rod as well.

Photos in classifieds show it’s 100% Heddon. Lower grade.
