Try melting the cobbler's wax and add a bit more beeswax to it, in increments. Depending on the original formula it may have been made to be rock hard. I've seen some like that. I've also seen some that was too soft. I know that a couple of my trial batches that I made were too hard and added beeswax to soften. When I finally found a formula that was just right I wrote it down.
You can make your own pretty easily with pine tar, rosin and beeswax. You can make the "white" tying thread with Pine rosin, beeswax and a touch of mineral oil.
