Reel Storage & Display
#1When we started cleaning out my parents home I came across this 19th century grain-painted box. My father purchased it here in Maine some years ago. The graining and color scheme are quintessential 'Pine Tree State.' I've always liked it and wondered what could be done with it. A chance conversation and some quick math revealed its new purpose as fly reel storage.
I'm not a collector. My parents were antique dealers dealing at a fairly high level for decades but I never caught the bug. The bug that requires you to buy and sell and upgrade forever. Most of these reels (20) I've owned for decades. Most of them get used - and used hard.
The box sits atop a long table in the center of my office. I made the dividers from antique pine to compliment the box and lined the bottom with felt. Every so often a client opens the box and smiles...

#6This is a very creative and classy project. I like the subtleness of the pine on the inside of the box for individual compartments. Any plans for a type of padding or material in the bottom of each cubicle or are you sticking with the wood?

#9Thanks, Everyone.
I put a single layer of felt on the interior bottom then the mitered pine frame is pressed down into the box. The pine dividers are a simple lap jointed construction. They get pressed down into the frame. All friction fit.ReelPatina wrote: ↑05/02/22 21:44Any plans for a type of padding or material in the bottom of each cutie or are you sticking with the wood?

#11I adore that every fly reel in there has fly line on it.

You either like cane fly rods - or you don't.

#12Craig--
I am, or have been, a confirmed "antique collector," and I probably couldn't decide whether I like the box closed or open!
Thanks for sharing!

#14I wonder if you labeled it (or a sticker on the table) with "Pandora's Box" a la fishnbanjo, whether you would get more opens...
