Brown Trout Carving

#1

Post by john8 »

I decided to carve a Brown Trout in the trophy style that was done back in England or Scotland where half the fish is carved. This fish is full sized about 28” long and about 7 or 8 lbs. I started carving last Fall and completed the carving of the fish over the winter. I started the painting process in Feb but did not do much for awhile due to nice weather, etc. Have made some recent progress on it and it’s starting to look like a brown trout still have a ways to go but thought I would share along with some pics of the process.
Starts as a large block of wood and a sketch

Still have a ways to go with details, etc but it at least looks like a brown trout now at this stage.

Fine work John. Someday in the distant future, it will fetch serious money at an angling auction... :)

I was going to say, "Simply spectacular!" but I think Barebo said it much better, so I'm going to ride on his comments Image.

Thanks much for sharing,
Kenneth

Astonishing. Took some doing but I found a word that had not been used to describe your work.
When your angling days are done, or before should your winters be long and you put aside your fly rod, pick up your carving tools. This sport will be much the better for it.

Wonderful work, when it comes to wood carving art it takes 2 disciplines, both Carving and Painting.

Most impressive! Not so many carvings have the realism and artistry of yours .- VERY well done! My sincere congratulations on your accomplishment.

Spent some time over the weekend painting scales and details, it’s getting there.

I am done with the painting of the fish, now just need to wait for the paint to fully dry or cure and then I will varnish it and mount it on a board. Here is a picture of the fish on the cheery board it will get mounted to, still need to finish and stain the board so it has an even finish/color but it gives you an idea of how it will look. Will post a photo later probably in the Fall once it is complete.
