Hand Planer Recommendations?

Hi All,
Over the past few years I've picked up some rods that would benefit from having their tips scarfed and recently the "itch" to learn how to scarf has been getting greater. So, I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on hand planers? E.g. brand names, does size make a difference (lol), flat bottom vs. corregated bottom, etc...? What about knifes, if I pick up a vintage planer, would knife replacements be readily available?

What about reference material about the scarfing process?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated & thanks in advance
