Original price for Hardy Perfect

#1

Post by LeeB »

Any idea how much this reel would have cost when it was new? It's 3 3/8", no line guide, enamel finish, smooth winding plate, alloy foot, so probably 1950s/60s. Hoping someone has an early catalog or a memory that's much better than mine.
Thanks.

Lee--

I looked in my 1951 Hardy Anglers' Guide, and -- although there is a blank in the column of the table listing: the various sizes of the Hardy Perfect reels, the approx. Weight, the line carrying capacity, the Price, and the Spare Drum -- the entire column is blank in my copy! I don't know whether the dealers were supposed to insert their price, or the catalog was supposed to last for more than one year, and there was separate price list supplied each year or two.

My 1934 edition had prices listed, but they were in British pounds ad shilling. Sorry I couldn't help! Maybe John Shaner would know.

I read in the price-list for Hardys Anglers Guide 1956/57 that a 33/8 Hardy Perfect witout line guide would had cost you pound 4 and 5 shilling + 17 shilling in tax. A line guide + 15 sh extra. A spare spool for the reel would had set you Back 1 pound 7 sh. + 5,5 sh. In tax. Happy shopping! // steen

The Angler's Guide often had a separate price list. Here's the list from 1960. The first column is the price in pounds, shillings, cents. The second column is tax.

Bought my 3 3/8" Perfect in 1959-1960. As I recall it was 29.95. My buddies gave me a big ration of crap for paying all that money for a fancy English reel. At the time a Medalist was about 9.95. Still using the reel.

For perspective $30 in 1960 adjusted for inflation is about $300 today.

Cheers,
