Poul Youngs Adams Straw man

A place to discuss the collecting and tying of classic flies, the tyers who made them famous, the tools, materials and techniques they used as well as the waters they were designed for. While classic is generally used to describe old things, classic is also used in the sense of first class or in the highest form. Therefore a fully dressed Salmon Fly, or a Carrie Stevens Streamer are just as much classics as a Chernobyl Ant would be. Enjoy the forum.

In John Knowles book Backcasts, he mention a fly pattern by Poul Young, the Adams Straw Man. Does anyone know that pattern?

Paul H. Young of Detroit, MI sold variations on his Strawman Nymph, such as the Strawman Caterpillar and the Streamer Strawman. He also offered many variations on Leonard Halladay's Adams dry fly, especially spent-wing versions of the Adams, Adams Blue Wing, and Adams Egg Sac. But there is no "Adams Strawman" listed in any of Young's tackle catalogs or in his book Making and Using the Fly and Leader. I have not read Knowles' book, but I suspect that he conflated the names of two different fly patterns that Young marketed. The closest thing to it in a dry fly that I can imagine would be a Rat-Faced McDougal with a clipped deerhair body (like the Strawman) and barred hackle-point wings, which could be tied in spent-wing position (Adams). But the Rat-Faced McDougal is well documented as a Catskills fly pattern.

Makes sence, if no such fly was listet in the catalog. As a curiosity he mentioned a rivalery between Dickerson and Young owners, when they met at the banks of Au Sable. Also that he had ordered a totel of 40 rods from Dickerson, during his fishing career ;)

That is information that would be well worth knowing. Of course, some noted anglers like Ned Jewett and John Sweeney, Jr., among others, owned and enjoyed rods built by both Dickerson and Young. For example, Donald F. Valley, CEO and chairman of the National Bank of Detroit, owned many rods built by Dickerson, Young, and Bob Summers while still working at the Young shop after PHY's death. These include (just to stay with 7'6" trout rods) a three-piece Dickerson 761510 built in 1957 and documented on The Dickerson Site), a two-piece 7'6" PHY Martha Marie #3361 built in June 1958, and a very rare four-piece pack rod version of the PHY Martha Marie, serial number 4134, built in 1964. Valley also bought at least four Summers rods.
